Belgian conspiracy

A link in the e-mail signature our good friend Rich led me to this wonderfully well-informed site:

I always suspected Belgium was up to something.

Now I want waffles.

Malfunction…need input…must speak Flemish. :stuck_out_tongue:

<clears_throat>ahem</clears_throat>
I have seen these jokes about Belgium in England as far back as the 60s. Does anyone know when/where this all started? Just curious.

djm

I think Martin Milner started it.

GaryKelly helped.

Screw the waffles, I’ll take their chocolates and beer any day. Not necessarily at the same time, mind you :puking emoticon:

I really like Hercule Poirot, as played by David Suchet. Whether it’s truly in the Belgian archetype, I don’t know. But he is one civilized feller…

If you like Eggo’s waffles do not do this!

I have a heart and star Griswold Iron that I use to make this…

From Mark Bittman’s “how to cook Everything.”

Overnight Waffles Makes 4 to 6 servings
.

Time: 8 hours, or more, largely unattended

Super-crisp outside, light and tender inside, with the complex flavor of yeast-risen batter, these are the best waffles you can make, and they’re no more work than any other waffle; you just have to think ahead.

1/2 teaspoon instant yeast
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, melted and cooled
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Canola or other neutral oil for brushing on waffle iron
2 eggs
Before going to bed, combine the dry ingredi-ents and stir in the milk, then the butter and vanilla. The mixture will be loose. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside overnight at room temperature.

Brush the waffle iron lightly with oil and preheat it. Separate the eggs and stir the yolks into the batter. Beat the whites until they hold soft peaks. Stir them gently into the batter.
Spread a ladleful or so of batter onto the waffle iron and bake until the waffle is done, usually 3 to 5 .

minutes, depending on your iron. Serve immediately or keep warm for a few minutes in a low oven.

mmmmm…Belgian waffles and chocolate. This could turn into a bone fide craving
