Has anyone had the chance to listen to this song? I’m really diggin’ it; so much in fact, that I went and ordered a whistle. I can upload the file, but I’m not sure of the board’s policies for uploading copyrighted music. However, I’m sure you can all figure out how to aquire it on your own. The song is off of the new album, The Hidden Land.
Banjo + bass + whistle = amazing.
Can anyone play it? I’m really eager to learn this one.
Hmmm, seems more like a banjo tune. Maybe the engineer hates whistle. I like the bottom end - the drummer seems to know what he’s doing, bass is nice and tight too.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are an amazingly good band. Bela is a KILLER banjo player who plays everything from jazz to bluegrass/newgrass to classical (check out his wonderful Perpetual Motion solo album).
“Drums” are handled by Futureman on an electronic synth controller of his own design and he’s quite excellent. Victor Wooten on bass is simply put one of the best musicians I’ve ever heard and believe me I’ve heard a LOT. His live playing is simply mesmerizing. I never would have believed that the bass was capable of such sensitive music. If they come anywhere near where you live, see them at all cost. They will definitely expand your musical horizons.
Well, yeah, Bela Fleck is the most famous jazz banjo player ever. heh.
Paul McCandless is listed as playing pennywhistle on the song Lochs of Dread from the Live Art CDs and somewhere on the Outbound CD. I prefer the Flecktone’s live albums to their studio stuff.
I haven’t seen 'em, but my kids tell me they’re THE BEST BAND ON THIS PLANET to see live. I’m hoping to catch them when they’re in town in a couple of months.
I took my father to see them a couple years ago for father’s day. He is a huge “New Grass Revival” fan (Bela’s old group), but he wasn’t sure about all this ‘new’ stuff that Bela & the Flecktones were doing. Needless to say, dad walked out of the show a complete convert! Loved it!
I’ve seen hundreds of concerts in my life, of all different genres, and this group ranks unbelievably high on the list of ‘best live shows ever’.
About the coolest thing I’ve ever heard is some jams Bela did with like tribal musicians in some far out place in Africa I believe. I heard it on some public acess station when I was flipping around on the TV. It sounds incredible, he just fits his banjo in perfectly with the really intricate rythms these people were playing. If anyone knows where I can find this, please let me know!
What’s also really cool is that the conducter of the orchestra I play in (I also play the bassoon, hahaha) was at a festival one time and started jamming with a classical banjo player. (classical banjo? I thought the same thing) As it turns out, he’s the guy that transcribes a lot of the music Bela plays and fits it to the banjo. Pretty neat.
My cool Bela Fleck story. . . Went to see Paddy Keenan at the Prism years back. Bela was in town playing just a short way away. He came over and sat in with Paddy for half the first set. Then Paddy went and joined the Flecktones when his gig was over. A great night!
It is probably a real whistle. I had an Irish music party back when I lived in Nashville, and Jeff Coffin (I think that’s the correct spelling, but not sure) had a ball trying all of my whistles. His wife is (or was, anyway…I haven’t been there in several years) active in the Irish music community in Nashville.
