BEAUTIFUL VICTOR B PENNY WHISTLE on EBAY

Beautiful? Well, sorta. What do you think?

It was made in Japan. Is it a toy?

This looks very much like a Clarke whistle. I know that Clarke licensed the design and manufacture to companies in other countries. I’ll bet this is not at all different from a Clarke Original.

Heck, I want that Civil War jobbie! LOL! Just to have it, understand, not to play! Boy, have I got it bad!

FWIW, this is one of the pre-war (maybe pre-WWI) whistles of the Calura/Eagle/Biller type. They pop up on eBay now and then. Basically it’s a conical rolled tin whistle with a wood plug. On this one the mouthpiece looks pretty beat-up.

The “Japan” marking is a puzzlement. As far as I’ve ever been able to find out, most of these were actually made in Germany. If you take a close look at the close-up picture, you can see a ‘hammer and anvil’ mark or decal between the B and the next ‘cigar band’. That’s a ‘Made in Germany’ proofmark.

The one I have is playable but takes a lot of air and is quite breathy.

Thanks for the info. I knew someone around here would have the scoop.
Anna, are you really bidding on it? If so, and you win, let me know what you think of it.
