For those who are always looking for tunes: I have been listening to an old Jerry O’Sullivan CD, called “The Gift”. It is a great CD, featuring mostly uilleann pipes, but the second piece is an achingly gorgeous whistle piece. It is called “Wendel’s Wedding” and was composed by Tony Cuffe for his niece’s wedding. Tony plays harp, Jerry a D whistle and Seamus Egan a low whistle. There is also fiddle, guitar and bouzouki.
It is one of those pieces that truly leave you breathless, not outright sad but definitely melancholy. Of course, the fact that Tony Cuffe died at such an early age, adds hindsight perspective to the piece as well.
Is anybody familiar with it? If not, the CD is well worth listening to.
I couldn’t agree with you more… ‘Wendel’s Wedding’ is a great tune.
I’ve had a copy of ‘The Gift’ for several months now, and I always skip right to that track when I put it in my CD player.
