Bansuri and Shakuhachi

I searched the archives and found some info on the bansuri grace à Sylvain. Anybody else have any suggestions for CDs?
I didn’t find much on shakuhachi. Any suggestions there for CDs?
Cheers,
Aaron

G.S. Sachdev is a good player, with a number of recordings that are all highly regarded.

If I remember right Brian Finnegan of Flook! mentions some of his favorite bansuri players in the interview on Brad Hurley’s website. I may not be remembering right, though. . .

Bansuri? Hariprasad Chaurasia from India, easily one of the best flute players in the world!

Riley Lee has some Cd’s playing shakuhachi. Also check out this link for more shakuhachi Cd’s:

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll check them out and tell you what I think.

Aaron

Check out “Venu” with Hariprasad Chaurasia on bansuri and Zakir Hussain on tabla.

For shakuhachi go to www.shakuhachi.com.
“Words Don’t go there”- John Kaizan Neptune is one of my favorites. Solo shakuhachi with a nice mix of trad and modern compositions.
The Taniguchi 4 CD set is excellent too. And if you play, they can be ordered with the scores for each of the tracks.
But then every shak player plays different and if I could afford it, I’d buy everything on the list.

Tots

Does anybody know if their is a relation between Hariprasad Chaurasia and Rakesh Chaurasia? Rakesh plays flute on a Talvin Singh CD.
Cheers,
Aaron

Hmm… should have checked before posting. Rakesh is the nephew of Hariprasad and one of his top students. The Talvin Singh CD, Ha, is electronica but I found one on Amazon called Vira with just Rakesh and Talvin on flute and tabla (respectively). I look forward to hearing it.

There was a nice review of Indian flute in the latest NFA (National Flute Organization, our answer to the NRA!) magazine. I could xerox or fax it for somebody, if there is interest (PM me and we’ll take it from there).

g

P.S.: if you’re not a member of the NFA, think about becoming one. It’s not that expensive, and you get a good magazine and a directory of flutists. It’s mostly USA but not only. The magazine is mostly silver/classical, but not only.

Next 28 of June both Rakesh and Hariprasad Chaurasia will be playing here in Granada. Free entrance ( smoro, Serafín, ya sabes lo que tienes que hacer…). I hope to post a review of the concert of such master players.

Hi there,

A friend of mine opened some web sites for bansuri. You may find some CDs of Harsh Warhan, we can buy his beautiful flutes and also some pieces of information about his master classes in France:

http://wardhan.free.fr/

http://bansuri.stalig.com/

best regards,

tchie

The official URL is:
www.wardhan.com

and here is what my friend wrote about the Bansuri:

The best bansuri of the world are made by Harsh Wardhan, no one can compete. His flutes are perfectly tuned as he is himself a master of bansuri. His is the main flute provider for Hariprasad Chaurasia (but Chaurasia can play with any flute …).

He is making small flutes, medium and big flutes with the best Asam bamboo. No artefact (no varnish, no laquer,…) on the bamdoo. He is selling flutes all over the world.

Mainly, E flute is used in concerts by Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Harsh
Wardhan, Ronu Majumdar and others. This flute need a perfect handling to
play nicely (as it is quite big). If you have small hands and fingers, you (=biginners, NB by tchie) should start with a G or a F flute (this refer to the main note which is Sa, three upper holes closed). G bansuri corresponds to D wooden flute.

Harsh Wardhan has also released tampura CDs for concerts and practice,
perfectly tuned.

You may listen to one of the recording of Harsh Wardhan by using one of programmes
as follows:

you may copy this adress URL to listen:

Harsh Wardhan recently openned his bansuri flute school at Delhi and the site will open very soon.

His new album will be on sale, too.
(his concert recorded at 20th may, total 80mins)
