The 2008 version of this software just came out. I’m thinking of picking this up, not for ITM as much as the other styles that I and my mando-playing son dabble in, (particularly bluegrass, blues and jazz).
The features look pretty impressive, and reviews over the years have been good. Has anyone had a go with it?
I have the 2007 version and really like it. There is an extensive site for downloading trad tunes (http://www.alfwarnock.info/alfs/mgu_search.php) that I use a lot.
It is an amazing program, and I’ve only just begun to figure out how to utilize some the functions. Definately worth a go, at least I think so - especially if you are playing bluegrass and jazz. Check out the Yahoo Band-in-a-Box group for downloads of those musical styles.
Happy Hunting!
Wow, thanks, Bum! Alf’s site looks pretty good. Based on your experience, would you go with the bare-bones set, or one of the more expensive sets that includes extra styles, etc… I’m guessing I wouldn’t ever use most of it, but if I wanted it, it would be cheaper to buy it up front.
Hey Crookedtunes,
I bought the expensive version for the same reason that you mention. I figured if I like it, it would be cheaper in the long run. I’m glad I did. I love blues, bluegrass and old-time stuff too, and there are lots and lots of additional (FREE . . . and legal!) downloads you can find (again: Yahoo Groups).
Frankly, I’m sort of a moron when it comes to all of this stuff, but I’ve had a great time messing with it. I’ve tried to write a few songs (which I suck at), but the program is extremely helpful for this kind of thing. Plus, you can change the “styles” and play an trad song to a jazz, rock, reggae, etc., beat. Nothing like “My Darlin’ Asleep” played to a Marley backbeat. I’m weird like that though!
I’d say go for it . . . but that’s just me.
Have fun!
Just don’t go talkin’ that talk over on the other board!!
Well, OK, I’ve been running the free demo for a few weeks. It truly is an amazing program! Alf’s Celtic files are great, but there are (literally) THOUSANDS of well-constructed jazz, blues, folk, rock, ethnic, you-name-it tunes out there for free download. And it’s very simple to input your own, from scratch, from midi, from audio input, etc…
I’m impressed that the program is flexible enough to allow you to alter the rhythms, keys, dynamics and everything, and the sound (assuming you have a decent sound card and system) is great — not mechanical or tinny like a lot of midi files you hear played on a PC. The consistently good reviews this program gets are well-deserved, IMHO.
I’ve decided this is worth my time and money. Thanks for the advice!
