Bamboo Flutes, UK Supplier ?

Hi Folks,
Does anyone know where to get Bamboo Flutes in the UK? I’d like an Olwell as they are the ones most often mentioned but with Customs Duty, Tax and Postage they’d probably work out a bit expensive.

Hello Mac,
I do not know anyone in the UK but Colin has a Rhiannon Low D bamboo flute which seems to be nice. They are made in France though but hey, it is EU and the Euro makes it easy now. The link is a makers list and you can find many makers and “Rhiannon flutes” in there and an email-adress to contact Chris Dawson.

I’ll second the endorsement of Chris Dawson (Rhiannon flutes). I have one in G, and it’s great.

thanks for the information, I’ll get in touch with Chris Dawson, I was thinking of a different key, maybe F, I suppose it depends on what’s available. Any suggestions for an alternative key would be welcome.

An F flute from Chris Dawson would be ideal – it’s a great key in bamboo.

Hi Mac,
Chris does make Fs as well as Brian Finnegan had one the last time we saw him in November.
The one Colin has he says it plays like a big holed wooden flute which is different to his Olwell Low D (bamboo). In sound at least to my ears :slight_smile: the Rhiannon sounds slightly harsher in a nice way (i.e. rough voices can be very nice) and is louder to the more mellow Olwell sound which is still louder than most of his other wooden flutes…

I, too, tried to e-mail him and had it bounce back. Hmph!

Colin, I just want to add that Olwell F bamboo flutes sound much stronger than Olwell D bamboo flutes. I think F is a good key for bamboo.

Hi Jessie,

thanks for the info but as it happens I also have an Olwell F, G and Bb in bamboo. The F is strong and I love it. The G I struggle with and the Bb is wonderful when my embouchoure is in :smiley: Got to build up the muscles on those lips…
