Bag Neck Length

Hi Gang,

I have a nice new L&M bag from NPU. I bought it because my current bag is a bit leaky, and I am convinced that the neck length is too short.

Is there some accepted wisdom about how long the neck needs to be?

I’ll start off by leaving the neck a bit too long, thus giving me options further down the road, but it would be nice to hear other peoples views before I do anything to the bag.

Kind Regards,

Steve

As you’re a piper of some experience, I’d say long enough so that you can continue playing in exactly the same position as before.
There are lots of variables: length of chanter (when I play my C chanter I have a 2" brass extender plugged into the neck; when I play my D chanter on the same bag I remove it), girth of piper, length of arms, posture etc.

Steve,

see your pm.

Thanks for replying

I agree that there are lots of variables to be considered, and probably an optimal set-up for each build/body type. I seem to be having difficulties in reaching the bass reg, and feel that the chanter is a bit too closed in and upright. I think (apart from the benefits of a new bag, compared to a 10 year old one) that I’ll add a few inches to the neck, and see how that suits me over a period of time. Its easy to shorten it, but no so easy to lengthen it if its cut too short in the first place.

Cheers

Steve

I would imagine the shape and size of the bag would also have some effect to how the bag sits under the arm? How about the position of stock cup and blow pipe tied into the bag?
