Bag elbow tendonitis...

Does anyone have problems with tendonitis in their bag elbow? When I play Highland pipes, this doesn’t bother me at all, perhaps because I don’t have to squeeze as much. With uilleann pipes, I keep some level of tension on the bag at all times with my elbow except for the few seconds it takes to operate the bellows. This actually gets to be rather painful after a while :sniffle: .

Has anyone had any luck with a tension wrap or other apparatus to fight soreness from tendonitis?

Jack

It’s not what you asked for but.., make sure there are no folds in the bag cover and/or sweater/shirt you are wearing.
I had that a few times and that caused the bloodstream in my arm to be blocked and got me the same symptoms. numb arm, sore elbow.
Hope this helps anyway.

Jack, try IBULEVE gel, get it from your local Pharmacy, rub it in around your elbow joint about a hour before you play, it will give you some relief of the pain when your elbow is tender, its also good if you suffer from
arthritis in your fingers, it really does help during cold spells,

Bellows elbow for me. But I can’t blame it on the pipes. It’s a lateral epicondylitis or radial head ligamentitis. Came from hitting 85 mph fastballs in he batting cage every other week over the winter break in preparation for baseball season. Made it worse tonite!

Still, treatment is the same. Rest…yeah right! Ice…too cold for me! And, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents…I got my problem while taking the bloody drugs on a daily basis!

Specific injuries to watch for while piping are:

Carpal tunnel syndrome form gripping too hard and also an unnatural angle of either wrist in attempt to cover the tone holes. Make sure you position the pipes appropriately, bag neck is of appropriate length, etc.

Medial epicondylitis on bellows elbow. Use a suitable pad…or develop a callus.

Medial epicondylitis on bag elbow…much more rare, probably, but can happen. Make sure bag is airtight and doesn’t slip around and that your bag is pliable enough.

Rotator cuff (supraspinatus muscle) ischemia (decreased blood flow) with pain and/or tear due to constant muscle contraction. Give it a rest! Take frequent breaks, especially, if you are having pain.

Cirrhosis of the liver due to free session drinks. Take it easy…just have one drink per slow air allowed on the pipes by all the over anxious “reel fast” session fiddle players (get my drift).

Cervical spine fracture arising from effects of the hangman’s noose on the odontoid process of the second cervical vertebra…oh, sorry… wrong century!

Sorry but, with that you mean a lump of flesh that your body makes to protect an area from damage?
And that is not a problem if the body does that?

I mean, my elbow is like that and i was wondering about if it was bad or not.
I have seen a documentary the other day about some native tribe who hauled wood all day long on their backs and they developed large lumps (callusses?), some the size of a football, between their shoulderblades.
It was a sign of strength among that tribe.

Edit to clarify.
It’s my bellows elbow and it doesn’t really hurt, more a bit of discomfort really.

Epicondylitis is caused by over loading the elbow joint tendon’s, I have had it now for over six years. Rest does help but it will not cure the symptoms when I get bad attack in both my elbows I have cortisone injections which gives great relief for a while. Its a case of being sensible
in not overloading the elbow tendons, also try softing up your reeds so they play at a less pressure. Ibuleve gel as I have said will help I don’t
have any great problems when playing my pipes a little discomfort but thats all. If your elbow is that painful go and see your GP.all the best Stew. :sunglasses:

Try loosening the ‘grip’ you have on the bag with the elbow, and use your forearm for the pressure you need to play, providing you haven’t already tried to do so.
