bag airproofing

I found this source for neoprene. It’s called aquaseal

is this what I should be looking for to airseal porous leather used for bag or bellows? is that a good price? how many ounces would I need to do a bag and bellows?

Wouldn’t it be simpler to not use porous leather? Bags by L&M are not porous. The leather for bellows that I have seen used is not porous (can’t speak for European makers). I believe the leather treatment used is called ELK. No further treatment required.

Agreed. Antaine, you might be better off in the long run to get yourself a brand spanking new bag from L&M. They’re about $130.00 USD from here:

…scroll down to find the Uilleann Pipe Bag icon.

alas, i am a poor grad student and cannot afford a new bag or bellows. and I actually have a full set and a practice set that need to be done

Anyone used neoprene? I imagine you would have to keep the bag inflated while it cures and possibly add baby powder to keep it from sticking to itself, as with latex. It may delaminate from the leather and plug things up. How long will it last? Does it smell after curing? Beeswax and lard (Crisco) mixture is less labor intensive, lasts for years and has been used for centuries with great results. I tend to stick with the tried and true methods.

Liquid latex will do the job… though some may disagree. Alan burton recommended it to me and It’s worked for me in the past.

the piper who recommended the neoprene has it in a bag for the last 16 years and says it works like a dream.

Didn’t you try something like Tyre Pando?

I’ve never treated my bag with anything…and i don’t think i ever will…it’s been brought to my attention that due to the construction methods used in pakistan, any standard fix is likely to make matters only worse.

what leakage there is is fairly minimal, and much of it can be accounted for with reg pads and ties etc, which i’m in the process of shoring up…
