The city of Leeuwarden in The Netherlands
has built the coolest drawbridge I’ve ever
seen. It’s called “Slauerhoffbrug”, and it lifts
the section of bridge high in the air with a
giant robot arm.
A guess:
Perhaps because this is in Europe where they don’t, by default, assume everyone will travel by vehicle only, it’s a
pedestrian or bike lane? There does not appear to be vehicular traffic in the red section in any of the photos.
This is Holland! Bikes are king, and loads of streets and roads have their own bike lanes, and double lanes as in the photos, to separate oncoming bikes from each other. Pedestrians will share these too, unless they got their own pavement. The bike lanes in town have their own traffic lights too, and lots of people are on bike, quite a joy to watch.
Madison, WI also has some nice bike lanes, they even get plowed in the winter. Riding in Copenhagen is fun too, but ya have to dress well. http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com/
