Awesome cyber-vengeance scam.

Or something. It’s hard to say what this was, apart from brilliant. And really mean.

The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.

But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.

I wonder who he burned to win this ringing endorsement.

It’d be a heck of a way to cover up the theft of something or other, come to think of it.

Or even a murder–give the cops lots and lots of red herrings to chase down. Actually, that’d be a great plot for a mystery novel, or even a crime scene CSI episode; they’re known farm the headlines for story ideas. I guess we’ll know in due course if they’ve picked up on this one.

Read about this a while ago on tech news site The Register. The ad was posted by burglers to cover up the fact they’d broken into his house:
