Audacity Test

Perfect timing on this thread. I’ve been trying to find a free or very cheap piece of software for recording. Thanks.

Free operating system and software

Can you explain how that relates to Audacity and recording? Thanks!

Flyingcursor was interested in free/cheap software.

Audacity was developed by GNU/Linux programmers and ported to Microsoft and Apple OSs.

There are many more audio recording and editing programs in GNU/Linux as well.

For one example, check out Ardour, the program I am currently learning how to use.

Feel free to delete if you consider my post as being noise.

No, not noise at all. The connection just wasn’t clear. I’m not sure how I could delete your post anyway, even if I were a meanie.

Ardour looks quite nice, though maybe overkill for simple recording. Is Ardour or Audacity included in any of the distributions you pointed to?

I’m a fan of Linux/FreeBSD and open source also. But as far as I know, Audacity runs perfectly well on existing Windows and OS X systems.

I believe that most distros either have Audacity included or have binary packages available, but I only have experience with Fedora Core and Ubuntu as they support my hardware “out of the box”.

I don’t think many/any of the top 10 includes Audacity, but you can check with the package list links on the Distro Watch page.

I installed it in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and I assume you can install it in any GNU/Linux distro as long as you have the development libraries and compiler installed.

It is included in the Ubuntu Studio and 64 Studio distributions, and it has the binary package available for any of the Debian based distros.

Microsoft products and I don’t get along very well and I can run Linux much easier (and cheaper) than the other operating systems.

I do have Windows XP installed as well on my computer, but I seldom use it as I can’t afford to buy the software for it.
