Howdy. Again.
Here’s the scoop. My one and only brother is getting married in Nashville, TN in early November. As best man, I am responsible for the bachelor party. I want this to be really, really good.
Problem: I’ve never been to Nashville, and don’t know anyone there (as far as I can remember). I have no idea what to do for this thing; what’s available. There are the tourist sites and brochures, sure, but they’re all commercial and politically correct and all.
What I need are some locals to tell me the real score.
What I want to find is somewhere/something that is rowdy, memorable, and preferably pretty strange. Somewhere that will cause the lovely bride to be to roll her eyes when she hears what we did. The kind of place where one can make a complete fool of oneself (or someone else–evil laugh).
Now, here’s the hard part: None of us are drinkers or smokers, none of us are all that into the bar scene unless there’s some reason to go there. Same goes for strippers, etc. So we aren’t looking for a place to get smashed or…amorously serviced.
If only Nashville had a “Medieval Times.” That would fit the bill. The car racing course at the speedway would be perfect it I were independently wealthy. I’d like to keep the cost down around a couple hundred dollars max, for four or five guys.
Suggestions, my Right Honorable Bretheren and Sisteren of the Squeaky Pipe?
Tom
p.s. Please email me if you can–I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to get on the board, as our school’s computer security system seems to frown on message boards, along with joke sites and comic strips.
Three words: Open Mic Night. Nah, not daring enough.

Bump.
Come on, help me out here, guys! It’s my brother, for crying out loud!

Tom
Hey Tom,
Did you not get my email message?
I thought paintball was a good idea. Maybe the others were a mite silly.
Mack
Paintball is a great idea, Mack. The trouble is that I wouldn’t know where to go, and playing paintball in a public park in the middle of the night in a big city seems like an awfully good way to get shot and/or arrested. (any suggestions? Anyone? Anyone?) Of course, it IS a bachelor party, so as long as we’re all released from jail/the hospital the next morning so we can make the wedding…
Tom
What would you plan in a city you know? Do you want it to be particularly Nasheville-ish? You have mentioned what you are not into, but not what you are.
Ah, good point, Jessie.
(and open mic could actually be pretty entertaining…)
OK, so as I said I’m looking for something rather odd, something with the potential for roudiness/at least mild embarassment, something Scott won’t forget ever…even if he’d like to.
If this were happening in Denver, say, Six Flags/Elitch Gardens would be a strong possibility, perhaps combined with some sort of honeymoon supply expedition to one of the malls (wink wink nudge nudge) and perhaps a wake at El Chepolchepic (a cool coffee house).
In Portland, Oregon, we’d probably just ride the Max downtown and goof off around the waterfront area–it’s not too difficult to find free entertainment there. Maybe serenade the people taking buggy rides. A midnight hike to Multnoma falls and some “training” (there’s a railway bridge at multnoma one can climb up into, so that the train is passing by a few inches from your face–serious male bonding activity.) not recommended.
Eat at one of those Vietnamese restaurants with bars on the windows where the TV subtitles are in Chinese instead of English. That sort of thing.
Those are the only two big cities I’m really aquainted with. It doesn’t have to be Nashville specific (none of us are particularly into country music, though not really against it, either). It isn’t that I lack ideas about good bachelor parties in general. I just don’t know what sorts of opportunities there are in Nashville.
I hope that clarifies things somewhat. Probably not.
thanks for asking.
Tom
Ok, hmm…start with an open-mic night or karaoke (<–sp?) - there are tons, all over the place, all the time, and you can find a listing in the free paper, the Nashville Scene. There is a riverfront downtown…not very exciting, though. I’ll keep thinking on it.
A REALLY cool place is Cheekwood. There is a sculpture trail and one of the sculptures is an igloo-shaped buidling with a long tunnel and a hole in the ceiling. The acoustics are amazing and you should go there while you are in Nashville! I don’t think it’s open late at night, but YOU should get there. I loved that place.
More later…

Sorry, Tom, I never liked Nashville much. I haven’t come up with anything else. I mean, I loved the bookstores, my few good friends, the Irish music and my house, etc., but culture outside a church is pretty hard to come by there.

What, the Gran Ol Opry isn’t culture?
