Attack of the killer fir tree

Wanna see what a 200-foot Douglas Fir tree does when it’s sick and tired of 18 months of winter weather?

You call that winter weather? There ain’t no snow!

(Just be glad it didn’t hit your car, by the way.)

Here, we don’t get snow. Nothing so benign. Just hillsides sliding and trees falling.

It did hit the car, actually, but just a glancing blow. That car’s dead in any case, however, so it wouldn’t have mattered much. It’s parked up there because it’s on a planned non-op. I park the car I actually drive on the street.

It’s getting hard to find good Doug fir these days.

Hi Redwolf

Glad that you didn’t get hit by the branch, so is the tree due to become firewood any time soon?

David

Nope. Aside from the fact that it isn’t mine (it’s on my neighbor’s property), it’s an old growth tree, and you can’t remove those arbitrarily. Takes time, lots of paper work, proof that the tree is a danger (and I don’t think it is…a really big branch like this coming down is a once-in-a-decade kind of thing) or diseased, and tons of money.

The branch is big enough to provide a bit of firewood, though, so if you know anyone who’d like to haul it off to chop up and season… (no good to us, as we have a gas fireplace).
