At First Light

I just received Mike McGoldrick’s newest album, At first Light, with John McSherry. Let me tell you, that’s one good album! I haven’t taken it out of my cd player yet. It’s not like his Fused album as far as jazz goes, it’s more traditional, which I like. He dosen’t play the reels super fast, so you actaully hear more flute/low whistle. Mike is an excellent whistle player, pipes player, flute player. I would recommend this album to everyone.

I just picked this album up as well. It simply rocks!! The third track “Doinna” is the creepiest Uilleann recording I have ever heard. Hands down one of my favorite “whistle” albums to date.

I am somewhat familiar with Mike McGoldrick’s work with the rock & reel band Capercaillie. I love one of the instrumental tracks on Nadurra (I believe it’s “Argyll Lassies”) which starts out as a slip jig, then goes through several transformations until it ends up sounding alot like the Allman Brothers’ “Jessica”. Awesome! He also does some nice work on the Eden’s Bridge album “Celtic Journeys”.
