Anyone tried MacNeil Low Whistle?

Ryan MacNeil, whistler and piper with the Cape Breton trad band Beolach, makes high and low whistles that look pretty nice (and sound great with him playling them). They have a specially designed unusual looking mouthpiece. I think this is a fairly new business.

They can be ordered online now at http://www.macneilwoodwinds.com/default.asp (click on the “Gallery” link)

Prices are reasonable: $200 Cdn (about 170 US) for an aluminum low D, or $350 for a fancy-ass titanium body low D. High whistles are 130 - 170 Cdn. Not too many different models.

Anyone tried any of these especially the low D’s? Would like comments on sound, playability and service (response to queries, turnaround time for order).

It’s nice to see a homegrown Canadian source for the elusive low whistle and I’m seriously considering it, but the website is a bit sketchy on info and doesn’t have sound samples. I have a Beolach CD but haven’t checked over it for sound samples. Great band by the way, some of the younger Cape Breton virtuosos, all-tunes all-the-time.

Does he have a website with pics of his whistles? And how about the groups CD? A website where we can hear sound clips?

They have been discussed here before, just do a search.

Feadoggie

Thanks for replies.

Yes there are pictures and brief descriptions of the whistles in the “Gallery” section of the website.

Judging from the link Feadoggie provided, Dale thinks pretty highly of these items and their maker, so I guess now’s a good time to buy while they’re affordable.

If one could afford it, what would the advantage be of the titanium body?

Bill

The ability to go well past Mach 3 without melting.

Guess aluminum will be fine then. I can’t throw 'em that fast.

Bill

I can play Cooley’s at mach 3.

What, did you miss it?
