Anyone own/tried an Alan Ginsberg B set?

If so, what do you think? Anyone own a full set of any pitch from Alan?

Cheers,
Zac

Heard one today, beautiful rich sound on the drones, nice sound overall.

I own a Ginzy full set in C, medium-bore, ca. 1975, rehabbed by Dave Boisvert (AKA reedbiter).

I like it. Others have told me they like it, too. It’s pretty much all I play, pipes-wise. But that’s me and my flat set syndrome; maybe if I had a Rogge or somesuch I might like that better, but the Ginsberg isn’t giving me any reason to look elsewhere, FWIW. It has a pleasing tone, and the medium bore gives a bit more punch, which is nice.

I think, though, that getting them re-reeded from the get-go is probably not a bad idea. JES (AKA Joseph E. Smith) reeded mine, and it made a heap of difference for the better for intonation and performance. Pazziato owns a Ginsberg narrow-bore C full set; maybe he’ll chime in about the original-reed-thing. I may be mistaken and my experience isolated; mine had the original reed when I bought the set, as I understand, and I wasn’t happiest with it. Re-reeded, though, as I said: no complaints (other than yer usual pipering woes surliness that no one is immune to  ). I tried other reeds replacing the original, but Joseph’s was the business. He also said it was one of the easiest chanters he’d ever reeded.

I haven’t yet heard any C#, B, or Bb sets of Ginsberg’s, yet.

Hi Fluteboy

Uilliam’s boxwood D set sounds lovely and looks even better.

I cannot comment on B or Bb full sets as I only have chanters in those pitches by Ginsberg (keyed rosewood in Bb, unkeyed Egan style in boxwood in B). They both sound lovely to me (even when I am playing them).

First of all, Nano’s set is a beautiful set and it sounds excellent as well (Nano may or may not have something to do with the latter).

I own a Gins full set in C, boxwood and brass, ca. 2006. I use the original reeds made by Al in all but the drones, in which I use Childress comp. drone reeds. The chanter reed is great (subject to Minnesota weather). Although I don’t have complaints about the Childress drone reeds, I have recently considered going back to the Ginsy cane reeds. At one point it was taking a lot of air but this has been resolved (hemp hemp hemp hemp hemp hemp).

Ok, on the set in general: I love it. Its top-notch. Cap’n Morgan (on this forum) has played it extensively (ok, maybe thats an exaggeration), and agrees with me.

The Ginsbergs (Al and Joan) are great to deal with and seem to enjoy answering questions and providing solutions.
