I am wondering whether anyone here has any experience with penny whistle from Erik the flute maker or not. I am thinking about getting a better whistle than my current 10$ and I came across his store.
Any comment specially about the D whistle is welcome.
I bought a D whistle from Erik right after i started playing whistles almost 2 years ago. It’s a nice whistle, but I don’t play it too much. Not tunable, but mostly accurately in tune. Has a special kind of timbre, and I like the tone alot. The biggest problem with is, in my opinion, the balance between the octaves. First octave and the first few notes in the second octave are nice and even, but the last few notes require a lot of push and sound very shrill to my ear.
I would advice you spend a few extra $ and look for an other whistle. I like burke and goldie whistles alot. Don’t have to much experience with high end wooden whistles.
Thank you for the information krabben, I think I should explore more options, however I really like to try wooden whistles as I am a little tired of my generation D whistle.
Any more comments on those flutes, I appreciate any comment and insight.
Tommy Dion or David O’Brien whistles are excellent choices for wooden whistles. I also would not hesitate to try Paul Bussman’s (a regular on this forum) whistles, although I personally have not, as of yet.
You can buy more expensive wooden whistles, but I doubt they’d be worth the extra money to you. The three makers I referenced above are all very skilled and experienced at their craft.
