i am sure the mack hoover is great. i have 3, but none in B.
i have a brass B burke. not for sale, its one of my favorites. but the waiting time for it was like a week why don’t you get it from him?
I just might actually. Though I already have two of his whistles and fabulous as they are, I fancied trying something different. Oh yeah, and I’m also tryin to pick one up on the cheap
So second hand = good for me
Hmm, the Syn looks good! Gaelic Crossings don’t sell a B though so I’ll have to go straight through the maker in Oz…
Does anyone have a Syn? How are they?
It appears you are infected with B whistle monogamy. It is possible to have two birds with differing brands of feathers and enjoy a bush quintet.
Seriously, to the starter of this topic, the Syn B I have (which is an aluminium one) is my best whistle. It is a soft sounding one that does not irritate my wife’s canine hearing in the car. IMO it is a very sweet and mellow hearth instrument which would also be suitable in auditorium with miking up. This gives me courage as I am always wary of high whistles in miked conditions.
Erle Bartlett also makes red lancewood whistles of similar design. Cost a bit more. He is a burly man who makes gentle jewellery in the form of instruments.
I’ve made some rather nice B whistles out of copper, but they keep corroding slightly. If you didn’t mind that, I’d be willing to give you one. They’re not really in the same league as the high end ones, but hey,I enjoy playing them, and you can’t beat the price(free). PM me if you’re interested.
Why would you not go straight to the maker? It’s cheaper, you know you’re getting a good one, and the wait time… heh… well, let’s put it this way: I’m pretty sure I got my whistles before the check reached it’s end location. And the whistles were coming from Australia, while the check was going to the US.
I’ve never tried a Sindt. But, for what it’s worth, the Syn B is my favorite whistle.
I just thought that maybe they had stock here in the US. But they didn’t even have a B listed. And I have since contacted the maker. I’m all over it. Looks like I’m gonna end up with a few B’s soon. Oh well!
I am not much into patriotism but Australia has some of the best whistle and flute makers sourced in the Celtic traditions - approachable, modest, ingenious and experienced.
Talasiga, I am sure you are right to recommend your fellow Aussies, and I look forward to receiving the whistle I have ordered from Mr Bartlet (Syn). He seems like a top bloke and a quality whistlemaker.
I do still fancy a sindt though (in one key or another). It’s a shame the wait is over a year now… I guess they’re popular!
I did not give you my reason for not sticking with the Syn. And you didn’t ask for it either before you posted your comment.
The Syn did not suit me. I had D and B tubes with the one head. The head clogged, the B lasted about one tune and was not playing well, was not particularly responsive. The D had an issue wit hone of the high notes. It was fussy and frustrating to play.
Maybe it was a once off glitch. The man who bought it off me sent back the head to Erle when ordering tubes for the rest of the available keys. Erle sent him a new one. Which I briefly played with one of the higher keyed tunes on it. It didn’t have any problems and played nice and clearly.
So what is not surprising or were you just having a go at me? Cheap shot because you would not have invoked that line if I would have said I was quite pleased with a whistle (as I did in this thread about the Sindt B or about my Humphrey just yesterday on one of the Black Diamond threads).
Its not cos he’s Aussie that I recommend him. Nationality does not make good whistles. Nationality is mostly coincidental. That is why I prefaced my earlier post the way I did.
IMO, even if Mr Bartlett lived in County Clare, Eire, he would still be a great whistle maker. I reckon there’s more horse shit in Australia than there is in Eire but that hasn’t stopped talent in this country from blooming.
Well, well well - you’re a clever fella, aint ya?
You bought a whistle that maybe had a “once off glitch”.
Instead of returning it to the maker you sold it to another fella.
The other fella returned it to the maker and got it replaced.
You then got to play the fixed up whistle and enjoyed it.
