I was looking at some Nuala Kennedy videos the other day and liked her fiddle player. Her name is Dana Lyn, and I found her Myspace page. It has four tunes on it, each very different from the other. So I downloaded two of her albums, which I listened to shoveling snow this morning. One is called Bach Reformed, which is Bach solo violin and cello pieces arranged for violin and guitar or mandolin. It’s wonderful; very faithful to Bach, but still with a little folk flair to it. The other is the really interesting one, called Aqualude. I wouldn’t even know how to categorize it. It’s nothing at all like rock music, but it’s most reminiscent to me of the Mothers (Burnt Weenie Sandwich, the Grand Wazoo, Hot Rats), King Crimson (Red, Starless and Bible Black era), and Gentle Giant. I really can’t get enough of it. She has another album of ITM, which I’ll probably get soon.
I met Dana Lyn (The Nuala Kennedy Trio) May 2012 when they played a house concert in Fairfield. All three musicians brilliant in their own right. What I found interesting while talking with Dana is she is comfortable with playing violin in multiple genres, at ease with anything. Lovely lady.
