Anyone else here on Second Life?

Just curious, got my first introduction to Second Life last night, a friend showed me some very nice Irish music related areas in the world.

Not me, I prefer to fornicate with my actual genitals, and practice piping with my actual practice set.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love that parody site.

Anyway, its an interesting environment, a few nicely constructed pubs, streaming trad music, just curious who else might be there…

What is 2nd life?

A rather crappy attempt at a persistent 3d world.

The only upside is, you can earn real money.
Why people would pay money for stuff in a “game” that looks like it’s from the 80’s is beyond me though.

… maybe the 80’s is where they cut their teeth and they have yet to face life in the new millenium… I know I need to.

I haven’t made it into any virtual worlds or even WoW,
still stuck on cs_italy

I’ve been waiting until after I upgrade my ancient computer (hopefully this weekend).

Second life is an an interesting idea…it may not have a great interface today but fast forward 3-5 years and I think it has potential to change the entire Internet ‘interface’…

But then I’m a network geek by day and piper in my spare time

Marcus, if that was a Counter-Strike reference, then you have made my day.

If it wasn’t, then that works too, because I thought it was.

I used to be on something like that in the 90s, called Alpha World. Dunno if it’s still running - college got in the way.

Second Life looks interesting but the only computer I have that is strong enough to run it is at work and somehow I doubt I can convince my boss that it’s work related..

I think the entire concept of 2nd Life is really, really spooky - a bit like Better Than Life from Red Dwarf.

Reality is challenging enough for me, and I already waste more time on internet forums than I really ought to.

Ditto. Wow…there are some names I hardly ever see on this thread.

I’m in Second Life. Its one of the best creative outlets I have that is non-musical.

Second Life is a virtual assembly where the residents (those who pay for the priviledge and those who don’t – you don’t have to pay to play!) create everything in the virtual world. You’re given the tools to make objects, write and encorporate programs (scripts) into those objects, change you avatar’s appearance, play games, meet with other people and role play if that is your thing.

Major corporations have a presence in SL and use it as a conference space. There is a ton of music there, including live concerts. There are virtual museums that can be explored in vastly different ways than you can in real life – a space flight museum that boasts (virtual) life sized models of everything from Sputnik to the space shuttle and a Saturn rocket). The visual art is astonishing.

Its a glorified chat room – meet people with similar interests. Its a bit of a wilderness as well. I’ve been active in SL since November, and have had a great time! You can avoid the casino/sex club/dance floor places, and see some phenomenally beautiful, intriguing and imaginative things, all made by people just like you. You don’t need to DO anything, or buy anything. But if you don’t have the imagination or inclination to PLAY it would be a huge waste of time.

I’ve gone from being a bit wide-eyed and astonished by what I’ve seen, to a frantic learning period where I took every class I could get my hands on (free…all of them…or the equivalent of $1 for an hour), to the point where I create kaleidescopes and particle systems for (virtual) money, and I’m about to start teaching people the basic skills for building.

So if anyone is interested, I’m Alexandra Mensing, and feel free to look me up!
