Anybody going to the Liz Carroll concert tomorrow in the BA?

Liz Carroll on John Doyle are playing at the Frieght and salvage tomorrow and I was thinking of checking them out. Any of you guys going?

Until I move back to the Bay Area next year it’s a little too far to drive otherwise I might go. I read a post a few days ago here that said they really enjoyed seeing this show. They said that John Doyle in particular was incredible. -

Don’t be fooled, they’re both incredible. I don’t think there’s a better duo in the world for that sort of driving modern traditional sound.

Yeah, I listened to a clip of her on her website last night and now I don’t think I’m going. I’m not interested at all in the “driving modern traditional sound.” So unless you guys can convince me that her concerts are more puredrop I’m prolly not going to go.

Hey,

Well, Liz Carroll knows her stuff and she was brought up in the tradition. I took a workshop from her once and I learned a lot about the history of the music, both in Ireland and Chicago. And she can play the pure drop like very few others. The question is, WILL she? At the Sebastopol Festival, she and Doyle were playing a lot more of the wacky Martin-Hayes-ish wild stuff.

So I would suspect that this concert would be something similar, but I really have no idea. Could go either way.

They doen’t play pure drop as a duo, no doubt. Their music is brilliant, exciting, full of joy, and grounded firmly in the tradition. It’s not pure drop.

I dunno. I’m a huge fan of pure drop, and I spend a lot of time listening to old-fashioned (or just plain old) recordings. I surely do not want to play in Liz Carroll’s style. But when they’re up on stage, there are two great traditional musicians up there, in one of the best duos you’re ever going to hear. They are something really special, simple as that. And they’re nice people, too.

Incidentally, if you want to hear what Liz sounds like solo, there is an hour-long solo performance of hers online at http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/artist_detail.cfm?artist_id=CARROLLLIZ

Update – Just as I started typing this, (22 minutes into the video) she is joined by an accordion. Maybe a guitar will show up at some point as well. Oooh, they’re about to launch into a Trian set I like.

Anyway, this is pure drop Liz Carroll. Her playing here is actually pretty similiar to her duo playing with John, it’s just missing the brilliant but not particularly traditional guitar part. (Well, and she plays a bit differently because there’s not the back and forth that she and John have. But it’s pretty much the same style, sans guitar.)
