I’m looking for any tips on muffling or lowering the volume of my whistle. I play in apartment building w/ thin walls. I want to practice after work (late), but this would wake everyone up.
I’ve cut up a sock and wrapped it around the actual whistle part, covering the hole about 1/2 way. This seems to work ok, but I was wondering if anyone has a better idea.
I have a Silkstone D.

You can cut a piece of paper narrower than the window width, fold it to an L shape and wet the long end, stick it on top of the whistle so the short end hangs like a curtain over the blade down into the tube. The narrower the paper, the louder the tone. Easy and effective.

Hi Bigpow,I bet my neighbours wish that I would ‘PUT A SOCK IN IT’ everytime I practice!- Oh the curse of too thin walls!
A paper clip, or two if need be,
put vertically in the window and
resting against the blade,
will mute the whistle nicely. Get the
angle right or the clip may
slip into the whistle–but
that’s easy. Also if you
search under ‘whistle mute’
you will find a wealth of
suggestions. Best
It’s mostly bass that goes through walls.
I went around to my neighbors when I was first learning and found out that no one could hear it anyway, except one guy who used to play violin… You can guess the rest -he learned fiddle and hosted the weekly session!
