have any of ye tried to build a yolk like this?

Haven’t built one, but- one turned up a few years ago at pipe&drum school. One of the instructors accidentally shot a car driving by on the road below the school(it’s up on the side of a hill)… needless to say it was very late and no one was feeling any pain at that point- it really was not the time to be shooting a spud gun…

We used to play with this more innocent variety of potato gun.

That is (a) demented and (b) ****ing dangerous.

This nutcase is using a tazer, for goodness sake!

And the potatoes he is using are massive. I am tempted to try it with a smaller bore of pipe (to suit our weedy European potatoes) and an electric gas-fire-lighter. Not that tempted, either.

Considering you have to ram the missile home with a broomstick or similar, and prime it with explosive before igniting it, I think it should properly be called a Spud-Cannon.

“Smoosh”? What is this “Smoosh”? Does he meen squeeze? Is he foreign?

Smoosh means squish it in. Yes, squeeze.

We have also owned seisflute’s plastic potato pellet shooters.

5 or so years ago my husband made a potato gun like the one on the video with our son who was 10 at the time. It was white pvc, and they tested it in a field. Worked very well, then it went in the kid’s closet for a few years and fell into need of repair.
As that particular kid will not have enough common sense to engage in such a project solo until he’s at least 35, and the dad’s condition prevents him from re-engaging the project, we no longer have the cannon.

im just an eternal child!! 37 going on 14!

Yea, and you can’t spell “yoke”.

Yea, verily.

In sooth. I will aspirate when I choose.

Yeah that’s what I think of as a spud gun.

What they built was mental and a little bit scary.

Although it reminds me of something I built with friends one year. We welded one end of a copper pipe shut, clamped it in a vice, aimed it at a large block of wood and threw a lit black cat banger down the open end, closely followed by a marble. We never did find the marble again but there was a nice big hole in the block of wood.

no this is scary, cool sound track though! :

holy sh#t! :astonished:

This is why cousins shouldn’t marry cousins.

I have a friend who claims he once killed a seagull with a spud cannon. Wasn’t pretty.

That compressed air cannon is scary, but I’m rather intrigued by the concept…

We made a large, shoulder-mounted potato gun in high school. We used a can of hairspray to propel it. We used a regular Idaho potato (one of the big baking kind) and shot it across the baseball fields.

My dad and uncle always had a fascination with any projectiles and frequently made fireworks bombs and the like, so I didn’t think anything of a potato gun in high school. Looking back, I suppose it was a tad dangerous. Especially since we aimed off toward the elementary school’s playground. Something tells me they wouldn’t let a teacher do that today.

That’s what the instructor shot the passing car with …
and the only kind of spud gun I’ve seen.

he he he , i made one today, it is frighteningly dangerous/ hilarious!! ive even joined a forum dedicated to spud guns!

(the only problem there is the use of the union jack, thats a wee bit uncomfortable with me!

but anyway, i wonder of i can adapt my half set uilleann pipes…??

All our big potatoes come from Washington and Oregon. They export all the Idaho potatoes, so Idahoans treat Idaho bakers as exotic food too valuable to shoot from a gun. We have the same problem with Wallawalla sweet onions. I bet an onion would go faster.

A couple of tips and nits to pick:

ABS sewer pipe is not pressure-rated, while PVC supply line is rated (Sched 80 is nice if you can get it). Using ABS is a BAD IDEA, imho.

The TASER is total overkill, 'cause a $2.95 BBQ igniter does a great job.

Hairspray is fine, but there’s better propellants. Ether is a VERY BAD IDEA.

Many think that compressed-air spudguns are safer than fuel/air guns, but compressed air is capable of nasty stuff if one doesn’t understand regulators. Plastic shrapnel is a VERY VERY BAD IDEA.

Solvent cement takes time to develop full strength. Never rush.

Onions tend to come apart just past the muzzle, but the core acts as a sabot tank-killer. Much fun.

Oh - don’t ever try this at home.

Those sound frighteningly like the voice of experience…

You’ll put your eye out with that thing.
