Any info on my new(ish) fife?

Greetings all. I am now the proud owner of this

All I know that it was manufactured by Drouyn & Drouyn (a drum maker) in Brisbane Australia between 1939-1941. But that is all, and the Internet thing is otherwise unhelpful.

Anyone know if they were a worldwide fife, were they considered any good? and any other info that people know.

What can I say, I love trivia :really:

The only place I had ever seen that name was on drum forums. Nothing on fife forums that I can recall.

They had a retail shop in Brisbane from what I’ve read. So I don’t know if they made their own fifes or imported them. Picture?

Then I found this: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=405928

And from the estimable Mr McGee’s collection: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/collection.html

Congrats on your new fife.

That’s the one, thank you for your help

Seems that the fife might have been made in several runs. This listing states production from 1940-1983 and that 40,000 were made. Almost identical, but the engraving on the body looks a bit different. Hard to tell with the online photos.

Looks like they were sold to schools and probably took a lot of abuse. I wouldn’t be surprised if many ended up getting melted down for scrap, so even though a bunch were made who knows how many survived. If they are like their US counterpart (Melbay fife sold to schools) they may be designed to have a decent lower octave and play more like like a whistle.
