One way to make sure that the rings on a Delrin flute are firmly attached is to take advantage of the thermal expansion properties of Delrin. I machine the ring seating about a tenth of a millimeter over size for the ring, and then shrink the Delrin by cooling it. Tap the ring on, then the Delrin expands when it warms up, gripping the ring tightly from the inside. I usually do the cooling in the kitchen freezer, but since we had snow on the ground today, here is another way to do it.
Terry.. I’ll make you a deal. One of your flutes and i’ll send you a box of that stuff! It is falling from the sky again and I am sick of keeping the porch and veranda free of the stuff..
Heh heh, there’s a story, and I have no idea if there is any truth in it, that during the Ballarat gold rush, they brought ice from California for the miners’ drinks.
At around the same time, Siccama, Ward, Boehm, Pratten, Clinton and Carte were busily bringing out new flute models…
(Ballarat is about 70 miles northwest of Melbourne. I grew up there and did a bit of gold panning myself, with some success.)
