Another Calvin & Hobbes Moment of Reflection

So true…

Ahhh immediate gratification. That’s why it’s called “The Microwave Culture”.

It isn’t, really, but since I just made that up, I’d like to have people call it that. Then I can say “I coined that phrase”. I’ve always wanted to say coined.

As a collector of unique words and phrases, I hereby add “The Microwave Culture” to my repertoire and promise to use it whenver fitting, and will of course credit the great NicoMoreno with the coining. :sunglasses: I have great influence, you know-- I now have all my friends, near and far, saying “snarky”, and am slowly getting them to use “sparrowfart o’clock” (per GK). It should only be a matter of time, Nic.

I’ve got nothing against the sort of character that
comes from hard work and integrity. I just want it now.
Where’s that microwave?

Thanks for posting these great cartoons.

That will be fun, because of course NicoMoreno is not my real name, so this phrase will be attributed to a person who, one could say, does not really exist… Hehe… lots of fun…

If you really want to know my name, you should be aware of two things: First, I had an italian teacher in high school who called me Nico because that is diminutive version of my name in italian (ie you need to figure out the full name of which Nico is the nick-name, and then translate it to English… come to think of it, you could also translate it to French, or Spanish, as the spelling is the same). Second you need to be aware that the last name is a double pun. I am most definitely NOT a brown-haired boy (which is the literal translation from the Spanish), and, in a way it is a translation of my name.

Now, I do not really hold a Bloomfielding desire to keep my name secret, and many people on this board actually know my real name, but if you feel like guessing, feel free not to enlarge and recolour the above!

My name is Aaron Walden. Walden because it was my father’s name, and my grandfather’s, and my great grandfather’s, and my great-great grandfather’s… Aaron because my mother met someone by that name and it appealed to her.

Well, at this posting, we’re all still named rich, so your wonderful term is going to be attributed to rich.
Oh, and ad does have pull…this I can attest to. If it weren’t for her, I’d never had said “snarky” (gosh it feels good to say that…it’s been a while)

So what’s so wrong with immediate gratification? Tell me. NOW.

The current phrase-in-vogue for the effect is ‘the McDonaldization of society’, so now
we can say that the McDonaldization of society has led us into the habits of a
microwave culture. Clearly, this means we are all destined to be reheating McDonald’s
leftovers in the microwave tonight. As a vegetarian, I find this particularly tragic, because
there is nothing more vile than a microwaved house salad.

On names, I’m not particularly keeping it secret from people-on-the-board, I’m keeping
it secret from web searches. If my last name was ‘Jones’, I wouldn’t care, but searches
on my name uniquely identify me. It’s amazing how much background someone can find
on me with just my name (we didn’t have web searches when I first started posting to
usenet… we didn’t have a -web-! It was by no means obvious that every word I wrote
was being recorded in perpetuity… ) If your name is remotely unique, try googling it and
see…

Not Elvis…surely?

Slan,
D.

And where did it come from to begin with, I wonder . . .

The History of Snarky

My Mother-in-Law… oh, wait… you meant the word, not the attitude…

well, when I posted, my name was still NicoMoreno…

Hehe… Two people have already used my phrase… I love it!
