another burke question

i have decided to get a burke. now which one? if anyone feels like echanging a few emails and answering a few dumb questions of mine that would be great.

ps dale rocks

Since I own soprano D Burkes in all three available materials and have both old and new styles, maybe I’m qualified to answer any questions you may have.
Fire away with the questions and I’ll try to answer them.

I own 6 Burkes in aluminum and brass. In concert, I play them almost exclusively. As with Raindog, I will be happy to answer any questions you may choose to ask. Feel free to e-mail me.
Cheers.

I’ve just got the one. Don’t ask me anything

(hey, it’s Friday. . .I have a right to be irreverent!)

Ok, I’ve got a few questions…Michael has 8 different D whistles listed on his website:

  • Aluminum Pro Session
  • Aluminun Pro Narrow Bore
  • Brass Pro Session
  • Brass Pro Narrow Bore
  • Brass Intermediate Bore
  • Brass Wide Bore
  • Composite Narrow Bore
  • Composite Session

Warming up:
Through my own experience the aluminum takes a bit of warming up to play; usually a minute or two. The brass does too but only five or ten seconds seconds. The composite is pretty much ready any time to play.

Volume:
I’m assuming the narrower the bore the softer the whistle, the larger the bore the louder. So where does the Session whistle fit in? Even louder?? I’m also assuming that the larger the bore the more air needed especially on the upper octave, correct?

What is the difference between a Pro and a non-Pro whistle?

Tone
Can-o-worms here! The aluminum and brass ones I’ve played sound exactly the same during a blind taste-test. The composite sounds like no other whistle I’ve ever heard, which, in this case, is a good thing. The only Burke whistles I own are the composites.

Thanks for your time and help!!

I’ve got a Burke Al-pro aluminum soprano D (I should probably make that an acronym), an Al-pro A, a WBB soprano D, and a composite Bnatural. All of them are very good whistles, but the Al-pro D is exceptional and one of my favorites. ALso, I don’t find that it has ever required any warming up at all, not even a second. Enjoy.
