I honestly don’t know what is the reason for this decision on Serpent’s part, but perhaps the people you are shaming had reasons of which you are unaware. It is easy to cast stones at people who are willing to take risks and speak unpleasant opinions.
I second Walden. You may not have all of the facts.
I just read Serp’s last ten posts or so.
Nothing in them gives a clue as to why he is leaving. So whatever it was, it was personal. So let’s stop blaming the board. Some people didn’t like Serpent. They had a right to say so. Serp didn’t seem to take it personally anyways. We sure do like starting fires on this board.

Completely taking away the issue of repeated violations of commercial posting rules, many of the reasons may have to do with various board members (myself included) being repeatedly harrased by serpent in chat and in PMs. Many of us have contacted admin over the issue, and tried our best to ignore him and his messages (although that gets difficult).
What most people who only visit the board don’t see is the way serpent treated so many members in chat, which was inexcusable. It completely drove at least 3 people from chat all together.
Serpent, not us, started that.
At any rate, serpent is gone. There’s not much point in further speculation, so I’m dropping it at this point.
I don’t see where’s the claimed risk. On any side.
Also, I wonder about this dialectic : [them bad guys] cast stones, while [us the good side] are willing to take risks…

I’ll give this an oh hell yeah and shit!! I’m glad the guy is gone. Cran, and anybody else in the chatroom knows the guy is an ass!
All I hope is that the guy actually stays gone, and this isn’t just a temporary thing.
And I’m not to sorry to see a “maker” leave, I’ve tried two of his whistles and… well I’m sure you can imagine… and it’s not complementry.
If we wanted those whistle makers to return, wouldn’t the logical action be to drive them from their safe haven at Gaelic Crossings, ie. make that place too hot for them too. Then, with nowhere else to hide, they might just end up here again (although I hear hiding in dark holes is becoming fashionable).

I can’t speak for Bill’s chatroom activities, since I never have much time to do chatrooms, but in my experience he is anythng but an ass. I’m sorta responsible for Serpent being here in the first place-- I found a posting of his on a different alt. Celtic newsgroup , checked out his website, and subsequently suggested that he look into Chiff and Fipple.
I have been an e-mail and phone buddy with the guy ever since then and have found Bill to be funny, informative and generous. He is definitely up front about his opinions, but that’s not a bad thing. I get a feeling that some people just don’t “get” his sense of humor. Anyway, I hope he does come back.

As has been mentioned before - not everyone seems to have the whole story. The things I have seen on and possibly more importantly off board certainly were cause for more than one raised eyebrow. Who’s to say if this is permanent or not, though perhaps it offers Bill some time to think about how he might wish to approach folks in the future.

I’ll admit Bill “serpent” can go totally kindergarten sometimes, but he’s not the horrible viscious asshole you people make him out to be. He’s quite kind when you treat him with an ounce of kindness yourself. Some of you just go totally overboard with the nasty comments and general visciousness (I won’t name names, but you know who you are) and I’m sure you feel totally justified in doing so, but there’s really no excuse. Bill is by far NOT the first to be driven off this board, and this was a long time coming. He’d expressed to me, at least, a desire to just drop this place and move to GC weeks ago, and it IS in response to poor treatment and the general bad attitude of some people (a very vocal minority) on this board, and not just ‘personal’.
I’ve been at this board a couple years, and I can say with confidence that it used to be a much friendlier place. I used to be very pleasantly surprised at how much different this place was than other internet communites. I’m sorry to say, though, that it’s looking more and more like any other random message board. I don’t know what the source of the growing tension is here, but it’s gotten slowly and progressively worse and worse, like a tiny spot that grows into a sore and eventually a festering wound. Serpent won’t be the last person to leave.
