Andy's Front Hall

While in the Albany area last weekend, I visited here. Quite a place. A great assortment of music and Cds. Also quite a few whistles.( I bought 2!) it is worth checking out their website if you do not already know about them. Nice people too!

Have only ordered one time from AFH
but the service was extra courteous and
fast. Their flyers and news releases are
a nice touch too…

I went there about a month and a half ago and was surprised to see how small it is given the (large) size of their catalog. It was basically a little room and was not up to date on instruments, but I did get an excellent C Sweetone (white with a brown mouthpiece) and an old-model (grainy fipple plug) Water Weasel in B natural that is very nice…it is now my computer whistle (the one I play when I am waiting for websites to load, people to respond to C&F posts, etc.). It’s a nice little store, though the woman there was trying to talk down to me. I just let her know (with information) that I knew quite a bit about whistles. Then she tried name-dropping, so I did a little of the same. I know, I know, I usually take tha bait. Shame on me. Anyway, it’s about 10-15 minutes out of the way and I don’t really think it’s worth it unless you’ve never been to a store that sells any handmade whistles.

Andy’s is a real pleasant surprise if you’re stuck in the Albany area on business. I got my first highender (TW cocobola D which I still have)there via catalogue many years ago. I’ve since visited while on business trips in the area, and recall giving them the web location for C&F when they first signed up with Dale.

When there last year, I was fortunate in that the very lovely lady there that day was packing up whistles for a fair the next day and I had my pick. I came away with my absolute favorite A whistle, WW, and a surprisingly good Kerry low D with a great paint job.

As Jessie indicated, I wouldn’t make the trip from NYC just for that, but if you’re in the area, it’s a great little shop to visit.

or, if you are like me and the next closest store that sells anything but Generations and Feadogs is a thousand or so miles away.

Andy’s Front Hall holds a special place in my heart. 'Tis where I ordered my late great Golden Tone from.

Water Weasel in B natural

A B-natural Water Weasel?? Is this a white- or grey-pipe whistle? Anyone know if Glenn still makes these? It doesn’t appear to be a standard product.

The B natural whistle is off-white CPVC. I think it’s the lowest key in that material (or in that diameter of that material, anyway).

STUCK in Albany, Philo? Hmmm.
Andy’s is definitely worth a trip if you’re anywhere in the area. In addition to whistles, they have a terrific collection of tunebooks and recordings of all types. Very nice, helpful people. If you ARE planning on going there out of your way, save it for the spring or summer, and check out nearby Thatcher State Park.

Sorry Paul; apologies to all who live there, and it is beautiful in summer. It’s just not my first choice for a winter weekend. Take care.
