Anybody who has seen the Andre Rieu Orchestra (generally on PBS) in Dublin will see two beautiful pieces played with a whistle. One is ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ and the second, that suddenly popular ‘My Heart will go On’. Does anyone know the whistle being ised? It looks like a Feadog but I cannot figure if it is a d or a b. The musician is a master with it, no doubt.
Didn’t they also play Irish Washerwoman at the end? I saw that one on TV once. The guy was good. And he went way up into the third octave and it sounded sweet and clean.
KC Jiang and I watched it (I taped it and ran it back several times to get a good look) and we agreed it looked like a Feadog, so I’m guessing it was an O’Briain tweaked Feadog. But others will disagree, I’m sure.
They did play the Irish Washer Woman. He is a really good player and anybody having seen all of the tapes can so attest. I watch them all just to see him perform, be it the whistle, flute or piccolo. Of course the whole orchestra is very good.
a little off of your topic, but Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra
is one of the most rounded and spirited Orchestras these days with crowd participation I advise any one to go get a tape of Andre Rieu.
The MP3 I have of Rieu’s “Last Rose of Summer” is in the key of C, and is played in a very high octave on the whistle, which indicates to me it’s being played on a high G whistle…

Speaking of “The Last Rose of Summer” does anyone know where I can get sheet music in the key of d for my whistle? I play it almost by ear but am stumbling on certain parts. I have seen it in books but don’t want to buy a large book for the one song.
