I’ve been working on An Speic Seoigheach, and I’m in love with this beautiful air. I’ve made a recording of the tune and its available (free) at the following URL:
An Speic Seoigheach is most definitely challenging! The recording I put online took about 2 hours of continuous attempts to get it to the point where I was happy with it. During that time, the humidity in the room went from 52% to 65% and the windows clouded up As a result, I later had to nudge the chanter reed bridle up a fraction of a mm as it had shifted down a touch with the usual effect on tuning. This cold dry weather is not kind to pipes (or pipers).
Serendipity! I just got “The Dusty Miller” for Christmas and ( yes, I’ll admit it ) spent a little time yesterday hunting for notation on just that tune. It completely knocked me over! Thanks for the recording; maybe between the two of you I can get it burned into my ear better.
Hi Cathy…its a sign that you are meant to learn this beautiful piece
Gays rendition of this tune is sublime and masterful, and I had the pleasure of watching him play it on his Kenna flat set at the SWAUP tionol this November just past. It was absolutely stunning, and the Kenna set sounded awesome…the kind of music that seems to speak directly to the soul in a language that surpasses words (which is fitting considering that a possible interpretation of An Speic Seoigheach is ‘the beautiful dialect’)
