An Oak to spare?

There wouldn’t be anyone out there who has an Oak D whistle to spare? I’ve never played one and am very curious. However, I have sworn high & sacred vows not buy a whistle, any whistle, for a while…

So: If you have an Oak (or just an Oak shaft) lying around and gathering dust, why not send it to me? The satisfaction of knowing that there is an outside chance that this might perhaps be considered a Good Deed when the chips are down (Dooms Day, that is) should be ample reward.

I realize, though, that this is a materialistic age. Since buying isn’t the same thing as trading (hehe), I am willing to send you one of my tweaked red-top Generation Ds in return. (I am not saying that these are great or anything but they play pretty nicely. I like them, anyway.)

And maybe there is something else we can work out? Drop me a pm or email me here bloomfield@the-spa.com.

Your friend and shnorrer,

All the ones I have extra are the poison ones. Otherwise I’d send it to ya.

I’ll take a poison one. Good enough to experiment with the shaft and I’d be willing to try my numb-lip luck.

Let me see if I still have one together. I’m keeping one for evidence, and one I want to try the crazy glue thing on. I think the last one is in two pieces, with a Gen head on the Oak tube. If I have both parts I’ll send you it.

I’ll email you with the info.

Thanks! This board is great. I may not be cute, but I sure enjoy being a part of the zany online whistling experience.

This gives me a great idea. Anybody have an O’Riordan soprano D just sitting around gathering dust? Hopefully in mint condition? Send it to me so I can do research on it…like how it sounds when I play it.

Actually, Bloomfield, I bet you end up with dozens of Oaks from this post. I just sent you an email and can post one to you on Monday.

Eeeeeekkkkkk,
I just got an Oak a few days ago via whistle shop and noticed a funky taste on the mouthpiece and that my lips seemed to feel a little wierd after a few minutes. What gives? Poison??? Anybody got any clue as to how much longer I have to live? It seems to be my Acorn’s evil fraternal twin as my Acorn plays beautifully and doesn’t try to kill me. Oak is squeaky @ 2nd octave and bad tasting. What do I do?

  1. wear chapstick

  2. don’t blow so hard. the Oak takes less air than most whistles.

Hee Hee, Give it to Bloomy, he needs one.

Kathy

I have an oak D I can give you.
If you want it, send me a private
message. It’s quite a good whistle.

All your poison Oak are belong to me!

Bloo,

If you end up with more Oaks than you can use, I would be grateful to have one. I’m going through a lean time that keeps me from being able to spend for anything other than food and heat, even for a $6 whistle.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Check your PMs Jerry.

Steve

Jerry,
I dropped you a pm, too.

Bloomey, the whistle is in the mail.
Should arrive in two or three days.
Please let me know, will you, when
it shows up. Best, Jim

Thanks, Jim!
Those who are expecting a tweaked Gen from me: I’ll send them out tomorrow.

And thanks everybody!

I have an Oak sitting around, with a cracked mouthpiece. If I put another head on mine say from a Generation would it affect the sound any. I am just curious. Any one have a link to a site that will show me how to tweak a generation? I have been wanting to get one for a while, which is the best kind brass or nickel?

Here are some observations based on experiences I have had. Other peoples’ mileages may differ.

  1. Using a different mouthpiece on an Oak changes the tone.
  2. An Oak tube has a slightly larger outside diameter than that of a Generation. Therefore it may be necessary to sand down the Oak a bit in order to fit on a Gen head.
  3. It is easier to remove the head from a brass Generation than a nickle one.
  4. The best Gens I have played are the green top “folk” whistles.
  5. Some Gens play so well that they don’t need to be tweaked.
  6. Instructions for tweaking - http://www.chiffandfipple.com/tweak.html
The instructions call for filling the cavity under the windway with wax, but it’s easier to use that blue sticky tack stuff that you get in office supply stores.

So…kind of changing the subject, but are Oak mouthpieces especially subseptible to cracking? I got mine home and played it for about an hour before noticing that the mouthpiece was already cracked! And I swear I never dropped it or beat it or anything…it was cracked out of the box. (Also had one o’ them poisonous mouthpieces, but that’s beside the point.) What’s with that plastic??

I just ordered a replacement Oak last week and it came with a cracked mouthpiece out of the box. So I told the company and they sent me another. Today it arived and the new whistle’s mouth piece was shattered into 10 pieces. Thank god it was insured shipping so I will ask for another.
By the way I picked up a waltons little black D the other day and i pulled the head off which was not glued down to see how it made my oak sound. Now I just put it back on. Is there any particular way to put it back on and how far on should I put it. How can I check to see if it is in tune.
