I just received a copy of this from Philippe at Celtic Grooves. The CD is a tribute to Frankie Kennedy (of Altan fame). Each track is a solo flute recording from different artists. There’s no accompianment and no studio effects. It’s just the man, or woman, and their flute.

This is a seriously great recording. The liner notes have each artist relating a little bit about their experiences with Frankie and why they have chosen these particular tunes. It’s wonderful stuff. Highly recommended.

To me the coolest thing is that it’s all flute solos, no other instrument. But the playing is so rich that you don’t really notice that there’s no accompaniment.

I just received the “North Wind” CD too. It’s great listening. It’s interesting to hear such a variety of playing styles and tone colors yet all are playing within the tradition.
