Gens and other cheapies of the cylindrical bore family often have pitch differences between octaves and most good players are able to unconciously correct this problem with breath control. As 1st oct notes play slightly sharp and 2nd oct slightly flat here are some useful alternate fingerings for any other tuning perfectionist,s out there for a more pleasing and “in tune” 1st oct.
I,ve used the ö symbol to designate half hole
F# XXXXOX G XXXOÖO A XXOXXO B XOOXXX
Cnat OXXXÖO or OXXXÖX(fork finger variation)
The ö holes are not strict half holes, the idea being to lightly touch the side of the hole slightly to impede air flow and is easy with a little practice. Please note these fingerings will sound awful in 2nd oct!The Cnat fingerings might work on a Sindt and NO this is not an April fools post. Many of us already use some of these fingerings as shortcuts unaware of the tuning benefits they provide. Have fun with this.
Peace, Mike
