I’m looking to find the names (and if you know where I can find abc files, all the better) of a few good airs to help me push my technique. I’ve had he tendency to gravitate towards jigs that I can just tear right into. It’s very satisfying, but I can’t help but think that I need to ensure that I’m learning proper technique so that I don’t reinforce bad habits.(I’ve only been playing a few months now).
By the way, I’ve realy enjoyed all the help so far that I’ve gotten from reading this site. Although, I have to admit that all the talk about great flutes has kept me wanting to get another flute. Though, of course, I’m VERY happy with my Seery and Olwell bamboo.

This could just be dumb luck, but that’s the ONLY air I know right now. I picked it off of the 3 Way Street album. Eugene O’Donnell plays it on the fiddle on there, but I thought the tune would go perfect on a flute. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ones you like?
It is really nice on the flute. Star of the County Down is also very pretty. There is also a waltz, Sunday River, which is on a Childsplay CD The Great Waltz. The only problem with that is that it has F naturals. I still have trouble with them on the flute, although on whistle they are managable. Otherwise it works very well.
Unfortunately, I could only find Star of the Conty Down. It has quite a few low C# in it. Do you just play up an octave on those notes or am I not looking at the right tune? Its a great tune though.
gcollins (Greg is it?) which album is Dans En Gro on? Right now I’ve only got the first one and it might be a while before I can convince my wife that I need another stack of cds.
Dans En Dro is on Nugent’s Two for Two CD. Search the C&F archives for “Dans En Dro” and you should find a partial ABC for the tune, courtesy of Christopher Laughlin who learned it direct from Mr. Nugent himself.
Hey Chris, ya think your old Abell remembers that tune from Gaelic Roots?
a simple, though quite beautiful air for flute is cailin na gruage doinne(the brown haired girl),which appears in walton’s “110 irelands best slow airs” book. i would also recommend desi wilkinson’s latest album “shady woods” on which he concentrates on slow air playing- i find his version of “my lagan love” (which i first heard on van morrison and the chieftains “irish heartbeat” album)especially mesmerising.a deep, profound flute album.

Peter.
Go to http://www.woodenflute.com and use the link to Tunedb. You can search for music names like “Down by the Sally gardens” and get the ABC or music notation plus the words, if any, to the song.
You must have found a different version of Star of the County Down. The one I know goes like this:

Ayup - Laurence Nugent taught me Dans an Dro. It’s great. I wouldn’t call it an air though - it’s not.
Yeah Loren, those Abells have played the tune many a time.
All the best,
Chris
