Air in the tube?

I play a Sindt high d mostly, sometimes a dixon trad as well, and have noticed something recently that has been really annoying me. I don’t know if it just started happening or i just started noticeing it or what, but it seems that now when i play (the sindt more than the trad) the sound of air going through the tube is very noticeable. I’m not sure how noticeable it is to others, or even if it would be noticeable on a sound clip, but i notice it and it aggravates me to no end.

Do others have this experience? THe actual sound of the notes of the whistle are fine, its just this undercurrent whooshing of air that i hear that is driving me batty. I have examined the whistles for cracks, leaks, can find nothing, but it seems as if the air going past the fipple blade and into the tube is ecoming audible.

Maybe it was always like this and i just didnt notice it, but any help or suggestions for ridding this sound would be appreciated, or even just a “yeah, it’s a whistle, that’s what they do” would suffice.

Try cleaning the tube and check the fipple and windway for any gunk. I sometimes find some on the end of the block next to the window.

It definitely sounds like clogging to me - cover the hole with blade, and blow as hard as possible - it should clean it. Sometimes, it doesn´t work, so I take a piece of paper, and push it through the windway.

My Overton does it all the time, in colder weather, I have to blow it through after every tune. I considered buying some sort of electrical thingy for warming the whistles up

Electric socks. Then you have happy, warm whistle.

Aha, that was the word I was looking for

thanks, i’ll try that
