At the tribute gig in Black Box, Belfast Friday past… what a gig!
Micheal Mc Goldrick = Matt Molloy
John Mc Sherry = Paddy Keenan
Kane O’Rourke = Kevin Burke
Alan Burke - Micheal O Domhnaill
Micheal McCague = Donal Lunny
Karen Kasey + Caoimhin Vallely = Triona Ni Dhomhnaill ( Vocals and Clavichord)
Was just like listening the the live in paris album
Would love for it to happen again !!!
All musicians in this project are brilliant players, but…
I can understand “Tribute to Joe Cooley” or “Tribute to Michael Coleman”.. This is already passed away generations of great musicians. “Tribute to Bothy Band” it looks silly.. All members of Bothy is alive except Mícheál Ó Domhnaill.
They not only play Bothy music - they also trying to play Bothy Band members roles. Just look at the hat of Kane O’Rourke )) It’s not fecking RPG game!)) It is simply ridiculous!

They are good but will NEVER sound like real Bothy band.
Finally you will understand me, if you know all difficult situation of Bothy Band with they copyright on music and label. And performances like that just make worse for real Bothy Band.
I think that it’s another situation where somebody try to make money on famous name. So it just can be honestly to ask permission from band members before start project like that.
So i think it was bad idea now and wrong time for all this.. We have a phrase here “Attention! On sale a false New Year toys! They looks and shine like real toys, but don’t give you happiness!”. I hope it was a single gig. It’s my opinion.
I noticed the hat but have to assume it’s coincidence. If they were playing dress-up, don’t you think John/Paddy would be wearing a hat as well? How do you know they didn’t get permission to do this gig? Maybe they did? All that aside, in the world of rock ‘n roll, there are tribute bands to living bands left and right…it’s not at all uncommon. People even pay decent money to see some of them. I certainly would’ve thrown down some cash to see this Bothy Band tribute considering the great musicians involved. just sayin’
“How do you know they didn’t get permission to do this gig? Maybe they did?” - Yesterday, when i saw a topic of my friend about this in his livejournal i called to Paddy and asked him. He said that he don’t know anything about this.
It’s probably a bit more controversial now due to all the DeDannan flap going on.
It’s funny, Mórga is basically a DeDannan tribute band (same set of instruments, very similar style of playing…in fact I think I like them better than DeDannan) but because they don’t refer to themselves as a tribute band it hasn’t seemed to cause any problems. Frankie Gavin’s new “DeDannan” band, however, is a different story altogether
I think in the rock and roll world there are lots of tribute bands for bands whose members are still alive and playing: there are Fleetwood Mac tribute bands, Rolling Stones tribute bands, you name it. So in that sense there’s nothing wrong with having a Bothy Band tribute band. The first Lunasa album (with McGoldrick and McSherry) was in many ways a Bothy Band tribute band…very similar sound, and in fact Matt Molloy remarked that they “remind me of a band I used to play with.”
Where it gets sticky is royalties etc. – in the rock/pop world, you’re supposed to pay fees for performing or recording published songs, so the original band members should receive some compensation. But with bands playing traditional music, the tunes are usually in the public domain and very few of them thought to copyright or publish their arrangements.

On the PRS and IMRO return forms you specify the title of the work (example “The Kesh Set”) and the composer/arranger (Bothy Band, Micheál O’Domhnaill, etc.). If the owner of the track/work/composition has registered it with IMRO/PRS they or their estate will receive the royalties automatically.
Musicians don’t pay the fees directly, instead IMRO & PRS collect fees from venues on a yearly basis and distribute them accordingly to the owners of the registered works based on popularity.
If you record a piece of music that royalties are due on because the arrangement has been registered, or the music is not otherwise in the public domain then mechanical royalties may be due. MCPS collect these royalties in Ireland (not sure about the UK) directly from the musician based on the amount of CD’s that have been produced.
You only need to obtain permission to record a composition/arrangement if it is the first time that it is being recorded. The right to record a piece of music or an arrangement first remains with the composer/arranger unless transferred to another.
Uh, madfortrad, did I miss something here? What’s all the anger about? I asked a simple question. That’s it and didn’t mean anything else by it. I really, for the life of me, can’t figure out where your hostility is coming from.
I kinda agree with Alexander here, but maybe on a different level.
The line up for the Bothy Band show was amazing but why not do somthing more creative.
The music world is riddled with tribute shows. You have Austrialian Pink Floyd, ABCD,Thin as Lizzy, ABBAesque, etc.
It’s great that the Bothy Band get a recognition for the amazing music that they made but it’s kinda “I wanna be in a cool band”
When I was 9 I wanted to be in the Famous Five…
I saw the clips on youtube and I"ve no doubt it was an amazing show considering the line up but it kinda seems odd to do a tribute show to a band when only one member of the original band is not around anymore. I’ve been in sessions with pipes, fiddle, flute, guitar and bouzouki and we’ll play a few Bothy Band hits but all of us there would have considred it fun yet cheesy to be copying a famous bands hits.
I just don’t think the Irish music world is ready yet for the “tribute show” yet.
I mean, whos going to do the Planxty tribute show and will they call themselves “Plankton”
A Bothy Band tribute … why not? Everything else has been done to them.
From what I’ve read, the Bothy Band members made virtually no money out of their years performing some of them were worse off financially after the Bothy Band that before. Part of it seems to have been poor management (choosing to tour Europe when they would have made heaps more money touring the US) and part of it seems to have been a poorly negotiated record deal (apparently the individual members received very little of the record sales). I heard Paddy Keenan say that he was asked to join Moving Hearts early on but refused because of his experience with the Bothy Band.
Didn’t the surviving members of the Bothy Band get together 2 or 3 years ago at the Gradam Ceol TG4 Awards Ceremony?
