does anybody know the name of the tune that comes after o’sullivans march on the best of chieftains cd? thanks.
I know the tune of which you speak. I have heard it called “The Burnt Old Man”.
Pat, is this the tune you’re thinking of? This is the one on my Chieftains record.

I’m familiar with “Burnt Old Man” as the title of a jig, IMO a rather dull cousin of “Pay the Reckoning”, which you can see here:
JC’s ABC tune finder also lists another 6/8 tune under this name, O’Neill’s no. 91, which seems to be the progenitor of the other jig.
The Chieftains march does seem to be related, at least as far as the first part is concerned, but somehow the tune suggests it would have an older, more dignified title!
Edited to add second thoughts. And then to correct the ABC code.

Yes, that’s the one.
Mick O’Brien plays it on his album, “May Morning Dew” and he calls it “An Sean Duine”.
Anyway, whatever you call it, it’s a great tune and I’ve always enjoyed playing it.
BTW “Pay The Reckoning” is a great tune for the pipes; Liam O’Flynn’s recording on the Planxty album “After the Break” is my favorite version.
I don’t know, i can’t get into most of the contemporary stage bands. I think the big supergroups of the 70s did the same things much better and we’re better off applying ourselves to the arts of solo and small group playing. Just my $.02.

I don’t know any of the tunes mentioned  but couldn’t agree more about the stage-band comment. I really enjoy a Lunasa or Dervish concert, but when I want to learn a new tune, I go back to Planxty or Bothy Band recordings (or solo/duet recordings, of course).
Thanks StevieJ…that’s the tune I was looking for ![]()
