I’ve had a long association with Tom Aebi, starting with a cocus 6 key flute I purchased some years back. I also did an extensive interview w/him that was published in the Piper’s Review (I don’t remember which issue..hmm ), which is fun reading! Tom doesn’t spend musch time on the internet, so I forwarded him the request that someone had asking for clips, and he OK’d me to post a few.
More people know Tom (especially in Europe) as one the top flute makers in the world. Probably less know him as a pipemaker with well over 20years of experience. Tom, based in (Basel) Switzerland, apprenticed w/Andreas Rogge. After working w/Andreas for a number of years, he made his own way. Many chanters later, he developed his version of a Kennedy, and more recently a Rowsome stick (there might be another?). Both chanters do what they do amazingly well; The Kennedy playing as close to intune as one can imagine (separation on the E octave is an astonishing, LESS-than-5c, or dead on!!!), and this Rowsome that has…well …the clips speak for themselves…
This is Tom himself playing. The chanter is a 14" straight taper, Rowsome copy, w/no rushes. When I asked, “is it realllly straight?” He replied, “well… (laughing) there are always small bumps along the way…the fine adjustments…”
The chanter is mine, which he recently (2 weeks ago) recorded the clips on. I’ll include pictures soon…
