I was using that ABC2win.exe program but it kept messing up and actually managed to crash my computer when I tried to uninstall it. Does anybody know of any free ABC programs that aren’t so dang buggy and crash-inducing?
I always use the one at the concertina web site. Sometimes it won’t convert an ABC that I’ve copied but usually it works.

Okay, now does anybody know of some sheet music for “the foggy dew” that is actually in the range of my whistle? All of them go below low D. 
Sometimes a tune in D that goes below low D can be transposed to G which of course raises everything up 4 whole notes. Melody Assistant does this quite easily as well as reads ABC files. It’s not free but my version only cost $15.00 a couple years ago.

I have a copy of The Foggy Dew from Cathal McConnell’s book “Cathy McConnell Teaches Irish Pennywhistle.” I don’t have a scanner but if you want to send me your snail mail address, I’ll drop a copy in the mail to you. The one I have is in B minor and starts on second octave D, correction second octave F#. Depending on which whistle you use it can get rather shrill on the highest note, but with the right whistle (I like my Burke Composite Bflat) it’s really nice.

I’ve read good things about Henrik Norbeck’s abcmus, although as a Mac user I have the good fortune to be able to use the excellent BarFly.

They don’t render uniformly fine, unfortunately; they produce non-standard abc code which can choke abc2win (in the experience of a Windows-using friend of mine) and BarFly if not touched up.

I use Melody Assistant on my PC and PalmABC on my PDA. It’s rather nice to be able to edit tunes on my PDA then move them to my PC where I can convert them to standard music notation, change keys easily, etc. I hadn’t heard of that concertina.net converter site before, but it looks pretty cool (just had to go give it a try). Chiff & Fipple should have a link to that one … for a quick, simple conversion it’s pretty slick!

Of course, they decided they wanted to learn this (and about 4 other songs) that necessitated hitting a C note on a D whistle, immediately after I convinced myself to skip on the Silkstone modal D, getting a regular alloy silkstone. Argh!

Barfly works well for me (on a Mac). Click view in split screen and you get the whole file menu, the ABC file with note being played highlighted , AND the selection in standard note and staff all on the same page. You can change the speed and play along from a normal score. Pretty neat.

I guess I’ve been lucky…Ive been using the program for a month and havent had any problems. Was it crashing when you were simply trying to start it, or were you doing aparticular funciton in the program? I’ve got a Gateway desktop with 256 MB of RAM (God, two years ago that seemed an ungodly amount, didnt it?). Do you have at least this much RAM? If not, maybe that’s part of the problem. RAM is a lot cheaper these days…ive heard you can get a 256 meg card for $60-$75.

I was using a pentium III but I have no idea what’s in it.
Anyhow, it functioned okay but whenever I opened it, a window popped up saying some file with an extension of .ini was damaged and to delete the file and the program would create a new one. I did that, and it still said the .ini file was damaged, so I went to unistall it so I could reinstall it, but when I clicked on the “unwise” thing that’s supposed to uninstall it, absolutly nothing happened. I tried to open the program, but it wouldn’t open. I guess the program got corrupted somehow, so I went to the add/remove thing in the control panel and tried to unistall it that way. The unistall froze up, so I cancelled it. It seemed to have unistalled it anyhow. Then when I tried to restart my computer, it got to the point where it said “windows is shutting down” and just sat there like that for a half an hour before I got fed up and pulled the plug.
The computer seemed fine when I started it back up a few minutes later, but I’m too chicken to try and reinstall the program now.
As you can probably tell, I don’t know jack about computers.

Whoa Jim - thanks for the Mac program link. For those of us with discriminating computer tastes - who are constantly challenged to find good software!

Cathal McConnell’s book has two versions of “The Foggy Dew”, the previously mentioned one in B minor and a version in E minor that is easier on the ears. It’s on the same page as “King of the Fairies”.

I’m not an IT guy but I do know that sometimes a computer will “bug up”. I’ll hit control/alt/delete and sometimes a cold boot may work. If it doesn’t typically a hot boot will.
I’m assuming you’re working on Win 98 or are you using 2000 or ME? (ME is supossed to be less prone to crashing.)
