A year's anniversary.

Ocarina Land has been online for a year, as of the beginning of this month.

What an excellent page! Good job.

I’ve actually been there before, but through the back door. I bought a 5 dollar sweet potato at Ben Franklin, and what I assumed would be a fingering chart inside the package turned out to be just a piece of paper with musical staff decoration and no particular fnction. There was no fingering chart.

So I googled “ocarina fingering chart” and got the ones from your site. Yes, I even noticed your name at the bottom. But I never saw the rest of the site because there were no links back to the homepage from where I entered (Strong hint here).

I found I have a 10-hole Italian system. It’s a lovely clear blue, made in Taiwan, and I haven’t taken it home to see whether it’s really in C or just an approximation of C. I got a few scales out of it, but having to use my pinkie fingers and thumbs for something other than holding on to the thing just was too complex, and I put it away for a while. But I’m sitting here at work holding it as I write this, so maybe it’s time to try it again.

Thanks.

I like that site and I like its creator.

Curses. I was hoping to find a theme park with white knuckle rides and hot dogs, and to be welcomed by someone dressed in an Olly Ocarina costume. :frowning:

Walden - I had no idea! Almost the site gives one a little TOAD (The Ocarina Acquisition Disorder). Good work!

Great job! I have a couple of ocarinas, one that plays and one that doesn’t seem to (but maybe I need to work with it more). I think they’d be fun to collect.

It might be easier for folks to find your page if you made it ocarinaland.com or ocarinaland.org. Both names are available, and I don’t think domain name registration costs that much.

No-one said the path to enlightenment would be easy. It’s in my favourites now but I can resist. I can. I ca, I c, I, oh dear…

Happy 1st Anniversary Walden!

I keep looking at them. I like the wooden ones that Hind makes, but I have yet to aquire one. One of these days!

Cheers,
Kathy

I remember visiting this site sometime ago, I think one of the forum members posted it. I had heard of ocarinas but never given them a thought. I was just astounded by the different kinds, and by the sound clips. I am surprised they are not more commonly played. Perhaps they are quite difficult----they sure look like it.

One link I really enjoyed before was a bit eccentric. It was the one by Hayakawa, which now does not seem to be existing anymore—perhaps it’s just me. He had some unbelievable soundclips and really interesting pictures about how he made ocarinas. And little speeches about the intense devotion it required to make and play one. He didn’t seem terribly interested in selling his ocarinas so perhaps he has retired from the public in order to do his own work privately.

Ocarina Land is a very interesting website, Walden. Congratulations on such a nice job.

I’ve seen these translucent ocarinas, and also 12-hole ones, online, but have yet to happen across any in the flesh.

I got a few scales out of it, but having to use my pinkie fingers and thumbs for something other than holding on to the thing just was too complex, and I put it away for a while. But I’m sitting here at work holding it as I write this, so maybe it’s time to try it again.

Yeah, that’s been the experience of more than a few of us, I think. My first 10-hole ocarina went into storage, for that reason. The one I got came from Saied’s, the big music store in Tulsa, and was of terra cotta, but it didn’t come with a fingering chart, and I was totaly baffled by the finger-hole layout.

I generally position the right pinky and certain other fingers to balance the instrument, when those holes are uncovered.

http://www.ocarinaland.tk should take you straight to the forums, and from there, just click on the Ocarina Land logo for the web site.

Thanks for the strong hint. I’ve added links to the home page from the fingering charts, now (example: http://s89015200.onlinehome.us/oc-land/itchart.htm ). The reason I had not before was that they are linked as popup windows from the main page, so it seemed unnecessary, but I guess I failed to take into account those who came from direct links, offsite, such as from search engines.
