I was at the Maryland Ren Faire today and heard a very nice little group from Montreal called Cercamon. I think that is how it is spelled. Their lead singer and whistle player was very good and played a beautiful sounding wooden whistle. Afterwards I went up to see who made the whistle. It was an Adler Heinrich Arte recorder made in Germany. It had a beautiful sound. Who knew?

Recorders get a lot of bad press here (much of it in jest) but in the right hands it’s a marvellous instrument.
They make Whistles too.
I’ve tried a couple of Adler whistles. I didn’t find them very recorder-like, from what I remember. Rather bland and characterless, really.
And I LIKE recorders a lot
These were actually recorders. I only thought they were whistles. I have never seen anyone play a recorder as fast as this was being played. His fingers were a blur. He was playing medieval french folk music. He switched off ocassionally with a Shawm. It was a nice group.

I had a similar experience last year. I was flipping through channels and caught what looked and sounded like a whistle player playing in a church service. The guy played what appeared to be a wooden whistle. Had I had a close look at his fingering, I would have known better, but I emailed the church to track down the player and figure out what whistle he was playing.
It was an AH recorder, and played very well! Good stuff.
