A Total Eclipse at the End of the World

I’m not sure which agency is responsible for these astronomy pictures, but I would like to make a small correction in the descriptive title of this photo. I would call it “A Total Eclipse at the Bottom of the World”. Here I was thinking that this photo had to do with a total eclipse causing the end of the world, and I was starting to feel anxious about the whole process. I am totally relieved that they were only talking about a solar eclipse as seen from Antartica.

I wouldn’t get too comfortable, Doug. I haven’t changed my mind since the last time APOD posted this. I still think it’s some poor guy getting sucked head-first into a black hole unleashed by the Large Hadron Collider. End of the world indeed.

I was going to post a YouTube link to Soundgarden’s vid for their song “Black Hole Sun” - I like the video for its sheer Dada-driven oddness - but the viewer comments below ruined the experience, and thus prevent me from playing the clever monkey. But let’s pretend I did.

Yeah, and those aren’t his chair and camera-case. They’re two aliens trying to rescue the poor guy.

So it’s another case of repetition? We’ve had a few instances of deviation, too. I can’t wait until we get them on hesitation.
