I have a second hand WhistleSmith D whistle that I was rather disapointed with. (it is an older style not the current design) The main problem was that it required lots of air to make it play. It took about twice the air of any of my other whistles. The other problem was that the fipple plug stuck out a little from the the whistle body, and the surface of the plug was a little rough which made the whistle uncomfortable to play. Yesterday I was playing it and decided that I needed to do something to make it more comfortable to play. So I sanded the fipple plug down to the same level as the body, and rerounded the edges. When I tried out the modified mouthpeice it not only felt much better, but the whistle no longer took any where near as much air! Apparently the small steps between the fipple plug and the body were allowing air to leak. Now with the air needed more reasonable, the whistle sounds better. (Or maybe I should say that I’m not overblowing it trying to keep up with the air demands) I was very surprised that making the mouthpiece more comfortable made such a big difference in the sound and overall playablility.
