A rare man..

..whose like we will never see again.

http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0209/kielyd.html

An Irish institution, hard to grasp his significance outside of Ireland, but one of our great Sons.

His voice is part and parcel of a generation, his writing even more.

A distant echo inside the mouth of the Tiger…

Rest in Peace.

Slan,
D.

Dub,

I’m sure you’re familiar with that footage of Luke Kelly singing Raglan Road where Mr Kiely is in the audience. I’m sure it was just quiet appreciation of Luke’s performance, but your man looked like he was dozing off…

RIP, Mr K.

Never heard of the guy but your praise of someone has never given me a bum steer yet so I think I’ll look up some of his stuff.

Obituary of Mr K in today’s Times.

As always, thanks for keeping us up…

Philo

from kiely’s obit:

His novel Proxopera (1976) tells the story of a retired schoolteacher, Binchy, who is forced to drive a car with a bomb into Omagh.

aiyee!!! this completely slipped my mind for some reason. “proxopera” needs to be on everyone’s gotta read it list, if you haven’t read it yet - if you have read it, then it should be at the top of your gotta read it again list. trust me on this one. you can all thank me later…

thanks for posting the obit link, buddhu.

And thanks for the heads up re. Proxopera. I’ve not read it, but I will seek it out.
