Sometime ago, I asked the list about using a horn case to carry a tina and piobs. It got no response, which I take to mean “bad idea” and/or there just aren’t many concertina/pipers. I think it’s probabaly both.
That said, I was just to Joe Cellini’s shop. He’s a professional road case maker. He’s done boxes for the everday guy, to Shakira, Estefan, Egleasius.. etc etc. I figured he’d be the guy to go to.
Anyhow, we took measurements and I should have the case by next week. The new case is based on a highland pipe case that I’ve been traveling with. I’ve been able to fit either a full D or B set, a 4pc flute, and small date book in a case that measures 24x5x12 (outside mea’s.) Problem being, I had to put the tina in a nap sack ..the sack itself, became heavy and rather large. Naturally due to the tina, this case will be a bit thicker and only 1" longer, so it 'll still go in the over head.
Your man Cellini said that he is more than available to make any kind of case. After I get it, I’d be happy to send pix of it to anyone. I already own a road case for guitar gear from this man and it’s top shelf.. road ready gear, so i know the quality is indestructible essentially.
Your case sound pretty neat…one set of pipes, one concertina, and one flute.
I keep three Anglo concertinas in a seperate case of their own. They’re all tuned differently (C/G, D/G, and C/A). I finally got it down to one set of pipes, the Bs, but unfortunately, I doubt if I’ll ever be able to do that with the 'tinas (with my band and all). I prefer the two-rowers, and have gotten use the the x-fingering p/tune. Wierd, I know, but ah…what a difference in the way the same tune sounds in D or A on a 2-row vs. a 3-row. I have nightmares of those 3-row years, although my last 3-rower was D/C/G–an old Jones with baby cry and drone (left thumb). It wasn’t that bad.
My next fantasy is to retune a 2-row concertina to B/E and pick up a B flute somewhere.
I had (one of the rare ones) a C/G Dickenson and swtiched to a C/G Suttner. I also have a C#/G# Suttner (ebony ends). I’m guessing that you meant and A/E. Ah HA! I’ve been thinking about that for about 4.5 years now !
Colin Dipper tells me my A/E should be ready soon . Tina and with B pipes! it’ll measure the same size as the Suttner C/G (btw- try a Suttner when you get the chance!) ooooooo ahhhhhh!
I want the top row (furthest away) to be in B, the closest row to be in E. This would be like my favorite concertina…the D/G (closest row G, second row D). The two most common keys for pipes being D and G, so this would translate to B and E on the B pipes (I think!). Yes, I just checked.
A Steve Dickinson concertina? He’s the best you know. Funny, my brother’s name is SteveDickerson…two letters off.
