A matter of OXXOOO

Just wanted to share this

I wondered, then checked your whistle

and could see it’s well-played already!

Then it struck me: Hiro’s oxx ooo must be off! He’s covering the top holes with the wrong hand, i.e. the right (wright?) ) one!

Elementary, my dear Watson

hehe, I am addicted to his whistle these days.

To be honest I completely have forgotten the theory above(about Just Temperament). I somehow just assumed that there’s only one minor 7th step(in theory) for Just Temperament.

Now I understand why I was confused with the issue whether I should use half hole method or not. I am determined to stick with half hole method(esp. for slow tunes).

me too

me too

thanks for sharing that

P.S.tinwhistles educate me very well.I love the aspect.

 Hehe, sometimes I’m fascinated by the mathematical nature & structure of music, and other times I just want to play & have done!

You’re right, the whistle is a great learning tool for us all!

Zubivka,

There was more than a hour delay for your star of humor to hit my retina…where were you?

Only a natural thing: in summer, when the sun sets for us, it rises for you… where it’s supposed to rise anyway, isn’t it?

Or, to answer more precisely: 52°65 N, 5°36 W (or thereabouts, ads Mr Spock)

Yes, it’s W of Greenwich, though in France and thusly GMT +2 (summer time).

By the way, check the island 5°75 W, same latitude (microdot on most maps): it’s supposed to be the centre of emerged lands.

Hey Hiro

Have you considered putting a dorsal thumbhole (backside) between the first and second toneholes similar to a Recorder?
(He didn’t say the R word, did he?)

Start small and grow large until it’s ā€œtunedā€, then you don’t need to cross finger the note!

Recently it is more interesting issue than problematic Mr. Temperament to think about where I should have the thumhole on my tinwhistle without losing its simplicity on fingering method(and without losing its unique tone).

I have considered putting a dorsal thumbhole for my right hand.
But soon my brain stops, because I have to face some calculation which I don’t like.

The tube which is tuned like Sindt’s with a thumb hole which lets my right thumb finger do some good jobs. For now that’s the best new tube I have in mind.Or I want to have the extra tube which works exactly like that of Recorders(I like to have my choice depending on my every whim).

P.S.I am not good at handiwork at all either.

P.S.2.
Checking my picture, esp. if you want your minor 7th on Just Temperament, oxxooo on my Sindt works quite fine(I made sure of it).So I need actually both of cross fingering and half holing. The picture explains(I think) the fact some complain it’s higher pitched while the others say there’s no problem. And for example the step from xxxooo to oxxooo sounds quite good.As we might know, Mr.Temperament is always like ā€˜Some go better while the others go wrong with that’. I don’t get it. I hate it.

My conclusion is that recorders arrangement on tone holes is the best solution. That said, if the recorders are so perfect, I choose them with no hesitation. So my usual thinking is focused on what they lost with the solution.
