During TV news coverage of the death of Richard Harris just now, in a retrospective of his film career, there was a shot of him in the movie “A Man Called Horse,” in which he’s captured by and lives among the Indians (American). I could swear in one quick shot he was holding a whistle to his mouth, it was definitely end blown and I could see the top finger hole. Hopefully it was metal or wood, because it looked like black plastic and that would be out of its proper time, I think. Does anyone recall? It’s funny how there may have been whistles in movies you’ve seen before you discovered whistles.
I can’t remember about the “man called horse” having a whistle, but remember reading about Crazy Horse carrying into battle an eagle bone whistle for protection.
(I believe they were symbolic, rather than to be played, can’t imagine tootling along on a charge)
I don’t know about the whistle, but this brought to mind a Richard Harris/not-proper-to-the-time I saw in “Camelot.” I haven’t seen it in years (hate musicals), but remember distinctly in one scene Richard Harris has a Band-aid on his neck!
Richard Harris was eclectic in extremis - with talents ranging from albums containing songs by Jimmy Webb, such as ‘MacArthur Park’ and ‘The Yard Went On Forever’, through many motion pictures, to Broadway.
I have been searching for one of his motion pictures for years… If anyone can help me in this endeavor, it will be appreciated. The motion picture is entitled: The Snow Goose.
Best.

I don’t recall that movie. Could it be that the one you’re after is “The Wild Geese” with Harris, Roger Moore and Richard Burton - about an attempted rescue of an African leader by a band of mercenaries?

The Snow Goose was based on a book by Paul Gallico, starring Harris and Jenny Agutter (She won an Emmy for best supporting actress) set in the early thirties to the evacuation of Dunkirk.
Wow! I’d forgotten about The Snow Goose. That was such a good movie. I can remember seeing it on tv and being moved to tears(which is VERY rare for me). I’d love to see that again.
I’m no help on whistle in A Man Called Horse, saw it at the theatre when it was first out, and not since…tooo long ago.
Now, I’m going to have to start hunting for The Snow Goose too…
Yep…The Snow Goose, as described, is what I am seeking. After all these years, I remember that film. Again, if anyone has access to a long-forgotten copy, I am interested. I agree that I do not think it has been made available on video…
Thanks and Best to all.

I wish I could have seen it also… alas. Even worse news (IMO), looks like another film version of The Snow Goose is in the works–but starring, in what has to be one of the worst casting choices ever, uh, Antonio Banderas??? (I am not making this up). Don’t miss it if you can…
